We report the first observation of the polar phase of superfluid (3)He. This phase appears in (3)He confined in a new type of aerogel with a nearly parallel arrangement of strands which play the role of ordered impurities. Our experiments qualitatively agree with theoretical predictions and suggest that in other systems with unconventional Cooper pairing (e.g., in unconventional superconductors) similar phenomena may be found in the presence of anisotropic impurities.

Entropy-driven assembly of nematic liquid-crystal phases of cellulose nanocrystals (SCNCs) in aqueous suspensions results in the emergence of a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase (N* phase). We report that a solvated, non-adsorbing, highly branched natural polysaccharide, Gum Arabic (GA), strongly affects the assembly of the SCNCs and modifies the phase diagram: GA leads to significant crowding of the SCNC rods and induces a new liquid-liquid phase transition, where SCNC-rich and GA-rich droplets coexist. The solvated GA does not induce coagulation or gelation of the suspended SCNCs (at low concentrations of 1-3 wt% of GA).

Combining bright-field and edge-enhanced imaging affords an effective avenue for extracting complex morphological information from objects, which is particularly beneficial for biological imaging. With recent advancements concerning the optimization of the analytical conditions, it is feasible to analyze polar molecules using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). In this study, the applicability of SFC is evaluated for analyzing 5-, 10-, 15-, and 18-mer oligonucleotides, and SFC is then applied to analyze deaminated products, which are side products generated during oligonucleotide synthesis. These side products are difficult to separate from the target oligonucleotide, with the difficulty varying depending on the deamination position and sequences, even when using ion-pair reversed-phase liquid chromatography (IP-RPLC), a common method for oligonucleotide analysis.
