The sedimentary environment has been modified in the Geum River where an estuary dam and midstream dams were constructed. Furthermore, the Geum River tributaries deliver contaminants from the wastewater of an industrial complex. However, the influence of tributaries and dams on sedimentary metal deposition has not been extensively studied. The objectives of this study are to assess metal accumulation and to investigate the source of the metals. Sediments were collected in the main channel and two tributaries on October 2013. Abnormal accumulations of fine sediments were not observed above the midstream dams. Chromium, Ni, and Zn showed higher concentrations in above the midstream dam, but their concentrations were not related to grain size. Cadmium, Cu, Pb, and Hg were much higher upstream from the first midstream dam and came from one of the major tributaries. Arsenic was the only element found at higher concentrations downstream from the last midstream dam and was likely sourced from abandoned mines and/or agricultural activity. The pollution indexes indicated deposition of all metals, except Cr and Ni, may have been affected by anthropogenic activity. With respect to long-term accumulation of the metals, accumulation of Pb, Zn, and Cu by anthropogenic input largely increased, implying accumulation of these metals has continued due to anthropogenic activity since the estuary dam was constructed. Our results suggest that changes in river flow caused by the estuary dam and anthropogenic input from tributaries sources increased the accumulation of heavy metals (e.g., Pb, Zn, Cu, and As).

Ammonia oxidizers are key players in the biogeochemical nitrogen cycle. However, in critical ecological zones such as estuaries, especially those affected by widespread anthropogenic dam control, our understanding of their occurrence, ecological performance, and survival strategies remains elusive. Here, we sampled sediments along the Haihe River-Estuary continuum in China, controlled by the Haihe Tidal Gate, and employed a combination of biochemical and metagenomic approaches to investigate the abundance, activity, and composition of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox).

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives (PAHs-d) have higher toxicity levels compared to its parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPAHs). Their partitioning in different media and large-scale transport patterns in rivers remain largely unknown. This study investigated the occurrence of 15 PAHs-d and 19 PPAHs in water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) of the Yangtze River between 2019 and 2020.

Carbon (C) sequestration and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deposition in mangrove wetlands are significant for global climate regulation and the removal of marine nutrient pollutant. To protect and restore mangroves, numerous check dams have been implemented within mangrove wetlands; however, the influence of these check dams on C, N, and P content, stoichiometry, and their depth-dependence remains largely unexplored. To establish a causal relationship between the check dams and C and nutrient variations, we first determined soil deposition depth post-check dam construction in both a natural mangrove and a neighboring check dam-affected mangrove.

This paper aims to determine the content and bioaccumulation patterns of eight trace elements (Li, Cr, Co, As, Se, Cd, Pb and Hg) and one radioisotope (U) in kidney, liver and muscle tissues of two fish species (Squalius orpheus and Barbus strumicae) from Nestos River (northern Greece), and the potential human health risk due to the fish muscle consumption. Kidney and liver accumulate higher element concentrations, except Hg. The site closer to the river-mouth presents higher concentrations since it receives effluents from agricultural activities.
