In a series of experiments the integrity of vinyl and latex procedure gloves were tested under in-use conditions. Both types of gloves were tested by three methods: watertight (645 samples), bacterial penetration (50), and dye exclusion (90). Results of the watertight test demonstrated visible defects in 4.1% of vinyl and 2.7% in latex gloves. Twenty percent of latex gloves and 34% of vinyl gloves which had passed the watertight test allowed penetration of Serratia marcescens when worn by volunteers. A series of manipulations designed to simulate approximately 15 minutes of clinical activity in an intensive care unit resulted in failure rates as high as 66%. Using the dye penetration test, there was a statistically significant difference between vinyl and latex procedure gloves with full manipulations, with failure rates of 53% and 3%, respectively. Both types of gloves provided some barrier protection. However, latex gloves performed better when stressed.

In this study, we present the first characterisation of the polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) paints of commercial Spanish brand La Pajarita preserved in the studios of Joan Miró (1893-1983) in Mallorca, Spain. Investigation of several black and white paint samples using complementary analytical techniques (XRD, SEM-EDX, FTIR, and Py-GC-MS) allowed for the identification of pigments and binding media in studio materials, as well as in three artworks dating from the 1970s. Through comparative analysis, it was possible to find significant similarities between the composition of La Pajarita paints conserved in cans in the artist's studio with black and white painted layers from three artworks by Miró.

The prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) significantly impacts the reduction of morbidity and mortality associated with the use of indwelling urinary catheters. This study focused on developing an antibacterial double network hydrogel coating for latex urinary catheters, which incorporated Ag quantum dots (Ag QDs) in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-chitosan (CS) double network hydrogel matrix. This work aims at synthesizing tailor-made poly(vinyl alcohol--vinyl acetate) (PVA) amphiphilic copolymers, obtained by alcoholysis of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) that could display improved properties as stabilizers compared to commercially available PVAs. Well-defined PVAs with different alcoholysis degrees were produced from a library of PVAc homopolymers synthesized by macromolecular design via interchange of xanthate polymerization and exhibiting different degrees of polymerization degrees. Subsequently, these PVAs were evaluated as stabilizers in the emulsion copolymerization of VAc and vinyl neodecanoate (VERSA 10, referred to as V10) and compared to a commercially available reference PVA obtained by alcoholysis of PVAc formed by conventional radical polymerization.
