Bi-phase dispersible core-shell FeAu@ZnO magneto-opto-fluorescent nanoparticles were synthesized by a modified nanoemulsion process using poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEO-PPO-PEO) as the surfactant. The morphology and crystal structure of the nanoparticles were studied by TEM/HRTEM and XRD. The nanoparticles manifest soft ferromagnetic and/or near superparamagnetic behavior with a small coercivity of ~19 Oe at room temperature. The corresponding magnetic hysteresis curves were elucidated by the modified Langevin equation. The FTIR study confirms the PEO-PPO-PEO molecules on the surface of the nanoparticles. The UV-vis and PL results reveal the well-behaved absorption bands including surface plasmon resonance and multiple visible fingerprint photoluminescent emissions of the nanoparticles dispersed in both hydrophilic and hydrophobic solvents. Moreover, the processes of solvent dispersion-collection of the nanoparticles were demonstrated for application readiness of such core-shell nanostructures.

The application of Sn-Bi series solder is limited due to the brittleness of Bi phase. Sn-20Bi solder with less Bi element content has great research prospects, but it needs modification to make it a substitute for traditional Sn-Pb solder. In this article, we mixed graphene nanosheets with nanometer Sn powder by means of ultrasonic oscillation, and Sn-20Bi-GNS ( = 0.

Phase Transformation-Induced Quantum Dot States on the Bi/Si(111) Surface.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Toronto, 184 College Street, Toronto, Ontario M5S 3E4, Canada.

Nanopatterns at near atomic dimensions with controllable quantum dot states (QDSs) are promising candidates for the continued downscaling of electronic devices. Herein, we report a phase transition-induced QD system achieved on the √3 × √3-Bi/Si(111) surface reconstruction, which points the way to a novel strategy on QDS implementation. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the structure, energy dispersion, and size effect on band gap of the QDs are measured and verified.

Droplets composed of two different materials, or Janus droplets, have diverse applications, including microfluidic digital laboratory systems, DNA chips, and self-assembly systems. A three-dimensional computational study of Janus droplet formation in a double Y-type microfluidic device filled with a shear-thinning fluid is performed by using the multiphaseInterDyMFoam solver of the OpenFOAM, based on a finite-volume method. The bi-phase volume-of-fluid method is adopted to track the interface with an adaptive dynamic mesh refinement for moving interfaces.

Multifunctional Bi- and Fe-modified carbon xerogel composites (CXBiFe), with different Fe concentrations, were obtained by a resorcinol-formaldehyde sol-gel method, followed by drying in ambient conditions and pyrolysis treatment. The morphological and structural characterization performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, N adsorption/desorption porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning/transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analyses, indicates the formation of carbon-based nanocomposites with integrated Bi and Fe oxide nanoparticles. At higher Fe concentrations, Bi-Fe-O interactions lead to the formation of hybrid nanostructures and off-stoichiometric BiFeO mullite-like structures together with an excess of iron oxide nanoparticles.

Enhancing Mixing and Thermal Management of Recycled Carbon Composite Systems by Torsion-Induced Phase-to-Phase Thermal and Molecular Mobility.

Polymers (Basel)

Centre for Biocomposites and Biomaterial Processing, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON M5S 3B3, Canada.

A novel torsion screw has been proposed to resolve the inadequate control of mass transfer and the thermal management of two component polymer blends and their carbon fiber composites. The novel torsional screw distinctly introduced radial flow in the torsion screw channel, which is a significant improvement over the flow pattern developed by the conventional screw. The heat transfer and mixing behavior of melt mixtures are enhanced by adapting screws with torsion elements compared with the traditional screw elements.
