During early development, embryos coordinate the growth of different tissues to ensure that they reach the correct proportions. A new paper in Development shows that tissue scaling occurs in the tail of the post-gastrulation zebrafish embryo. The study suggests that this scaling is underpinned by multi-tissue tectonics, a mechanism whereby the deformation of one growing tissue can impact the dynamics of a neighbouring tissue.

To assess the effectiveness of the 'Weet wat je eet' ('Know what you eat') school-based nutrition education programme on behavioural determinants and behaviour among students aged 12-15 years. A quasi-experimental study design was used, collecting data at baseline and after implementing the programme in both an intervention and control group (in total 611 students) across the Netherlands. Students from eighteen Dutch secondary education schools completed two consecutive questionnaires, assessing knowledge, self-efficacy, attitude, subjective norm, intention, and behaviours related to healthy, safe, and sustainable nutrition.

Rapid and accurate detection of protein content is essential for ensuring the quality of maize. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) technology faces limitations due to surface effects and sample homogeneity issues when measuring the protein content of whole maize grains. Focusing on maize grain powder can significantly improve the quality of data and the accuracy of model predictions.

Plant inflorescences are complex, highly diverse structures whose morphology is determined in meristems that form during reproductive development. Inflorescence structure influences flower formation, and consequently grain number, and yield in crops. Correct inflorescence and flower development require tight control of gene expression via complex interplay between regulatory networks.
