The simultaneous polymer functionalization and exfoliation of graphene sheets by using mild bath sonication and heat treatment at low temperature is described. In particular, free-radical polymerization of three different vinyl monomers takes place in the presence of graphite flakes. The polymerization procedure leads to the exfoliation of graphene sheets and at the same time the growing polymer chains are attached onto the graphene lattice, which gives solubility and stability to the final graphene-based hybrid material. The polymer-functionalized graphene sheets possess fewer defects as compared with previously reported polymer-functionalized graphene. The success of the covalent functionalization and exfoliation of graphene was confirmed by using a variety of complementary spectroscopic, thermal, and microscopy techniques, including Raman, IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy.

Since the debut of silicene in the experimental stage more than a decade ago, the family of two-dimensional elementary layers beyond graphene, called Xenes or transgraphenes, has rapidly expanded to include elements from groups II to VI of the periodic table. This expansion has opened pathways for the engineering of elementary monolayers that are inherently different from their bulk counterparts in terms of fundamental physical properties. Common guidelines for synthesizing Xenes can be categorized into well-defined methodological approaches.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), with excellent thermal conductivity and insulation capability, has garnered significant attention in the field of electronic thermal management. However, the thermal conductivity of the h-BN-enhanced polymer composite material is far from that expected because of the insurmountable interfacial thermal resistance. In order to realize the high thermal conductivity of polymer composite thermal interface materials, herein, an in situ exfoliation method has been employed to prepare a boron nitride nanosheet-graphene (BNNS-Gr) hybrid filler.

Thin films fabricated from solution-processed graphene nanosheets are of considerable technological interest for a wide variety of applications, such as transparent conductors, supercapacitors, and memristors. However, very thin printed films tend to have low conductivity compared to thicker ones. In this work, we demonstrate a simple layer-by-layer deposition method which yields thin films of highly-aligned, electrochemically-exfoliated graphene which have low roughness and nanometer-scale thickness control.

Polymers are often insulators, but this not a universal intrinsic characteristic of all polymers. For this work, the adhesives used, epoxy and polyurethane, do demonstrate this insulating characteristic. However, there has been significant interest in the development of conductive polymers, specifically adhesives, because of the potential properties and ease of processing of these polymers.
