Objective: To study the effect of binaural bi-modal fitting (one cochlear implant and a contralateral hearing aid) on speech recognition of cochlear implant recipients with low frequency electrodes incompletely implanted.

Method: A total of 15 cochlear implant(CI) users who have low residual hearing (250 Hz 45-90 dBHL, 500 Hz 75 - 100 dBHL) of their non surgery ears. We closed the top three electrodes to simulate the state of low-frequency electrodes incompletely implanted by fitting software. (1) The same tester received twice speech recognition tests in incompletely implanted state, one test used single CI model and the other used binaural bi-modal fitting model. (2)The same tester received above twice speech recognition tests again, but in completely implanted state. Then we compared the results of tests.

Result: The CI users used binaural bi-modal fitting have higher speech recognition score than the same users used unilateral cochlear implant model in low-frequency electrodes incompletely implanted state(P<0. 05). The gap between the scores of the tests by using two usage patterns in low frequency electrodes incompletely implanted state was more than that in completely implanted state (P<0. 05).

Conclusion: Binaural bi-modal fitting can help CI users to improve their speech recognition ability in low-frequency electrodes incompletely implanted state.

Background: The prevalence of hearing loss in infants in India varies between 4 and 5 per 1000. Objective-based otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem response have been used in high-income countries for establishing early hearing screening and intervention programs. Nevertheless, the use of objective screening tests in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as India is not feasible.

In this paper, we introduce FUSION-ANN, a novel artificial neural network (ANN) designed for acoustic emission (AE) signal classification. FUSION-ANN comprises four distinct ANN branches, each housing an independent multilayer perceptron. We extract denoised features of speech recognition such as linear predictive coding, Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient, and gammatone cepstral coefficient to represent AE signals.

Extracting speech spectrogram of speech signal based on generalized S-transform.

In speech signal processing, time-frequency analysis is commonly employed to extract the spectrogram of speech signals. While many algorithms exist to achieve this with high-quality results, they often lack the flexibility to adjust the resolution of the extracted spectrograms. However, applications such as speech recognition and speech separation frequently require spectrograms of varying resolutions.

Can one shift attention among voices at a cocktail party during a silent pause? Researchers have required participants to attend to one of two simultaneous voices - cued by its gender or location. Switching the target gender or location has resulted in a performance 'switch cost' - which was recently shown to reduce with preparation when a gender cue was presented in advance. The current study asks if preparation for a switch is also effective when a voice is selected by location.

Stapedotomy or Stapedectomy: Does It Really Matter?

Int Arch Otorhinolaryngol

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Unidade Local de Saúde de Gaia e Espinho, Gaia, Portugal.

Otosclerosis leads to stapes fixation and consequent conductive hearing loss. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment, and it can be achieved through small fenestra stapedotomy or stapedectomy. Despite the first being favored by most, evidence supporting its superiority over the latter remains inconclusive.
