Background: Little research exists about the factors influencing the foods available at family meals. This study examines the home food environment factors contributing to the presence of fruit and vegetables at family meals.
Methods: Home food inventory (HFI) and survey data were collected from low-income, minority families (n = 120) with children 6-12 years old. Observations from video-recorded family dinner meals, totaling 800 videos, were used to measure the frequency at which fruit and vegetables were served. Multiple regression was used to investigate how the fruit and vegetables in the HFI and other home food environment factors were related to the number of days fruit and vegetables were served at dinner during the observation period.
Results: Availability and accessibility of fruit and vegetables in the home were each found to be significantly associated with the presence of fruits and vegetables at family dinners. Of the fruit and vegetable categories (i.e., fresh, canned, or frozen), having fresh fruit and vegetables available in the home was found to be most strongly associated with serving fruit and vegetables at dinner, respectively. Higher parent intake of vegetables was associated with the presence of vegetables at dinners, and parent meal planning was associated with the presence of fruit at dinners.
Conclusions: Increasing the availability and accessibility of fresh fruit and vegetables in the home may be an effective approach to increasing the presence of fruits and vegetables at family dinners, especially among low-income, minority households. It is also essential to understand why families are not using all fruits and vegetables (e.g., canned and frozen) available in the home for family meals. Family meals are a place to promote the increased presence of both fruit and vegetables.

The Malvaceae family, comprising 9 subfamilies and 4,225 species, includes economically significant taxa, such as Ceiba pentandra, Gossypium ekmanianum, Gossypium stephensii, Kokia drynarioides, Talipariti hamabo, and Durio zibethinus. Chloroplast (cp) genome research is crucial for elucidating the evolutionary divergence and species identification within this family. In this study, we assembled and annotated cp genomes of six Malvaceae species, conducting comprehensive comparative genomic and phylogenomic analyses.

Light conversion films are crucial for optimizing vegetable crop production in greenhouses, particularly during winter and spring seasons. This study investigated the effects of a europium-based light conversion film (RPO) compared to traditional polyolefin film (PO film, control) on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cultivation, focusing on handle length, yield, and fruit quality in a randomized complete block design with three replications.

To analyze the emission characteristics of VOCs from pesticide use sources in Beijing, the distribution of commonly used pesticides and dosage forms in Beijing was obtained through on-site research, and the VOC content of pesticides in different dosage forms was examined using laboratory testing methods. The emission factors of pesticide VOCs for localized dosage forms in Beijing were established, an inventory of pesticide use source VOCs was compiled, and the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of pesticide use source VOCs were analyzed. The results indicated that ① Pesticide dosage forms were the main factors affecting the emission of VOCs from pesticides, and when accounting for VOC emissions from pesticide sources, it is necessary to know the types of pesticides and active ingredients in the target area and obtain information on pesticide dosage forms simultaneously.

The widely recognized phytohormone, salicylic acid (SA), serves not only as an exogenous additive for fruits and vegetables but, more crucially, as an in vivo regulator of the entire plant growth process. Consequently, it is essential to achieve both in vitro detection and in vivo imaging analysis of the plant hormone SA. In this study, a biocompatible supramolecular probe was crafted using a "label-free" SA aptamer as the host for an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) organic small molecule.

The potential health benefits of sea buckthorn polyphenols (SBP) have been extensively studied, attracting increasing attention from researchers. This paper reviews the composition of SBP, the effects of processing on SBP, its interactions with nutrients, and its protective role in the gastrointestinal tract. Polyphenols influence nutrient absorption and metabolism by regulating the intestinal flora, thereby enhancing bioavailability, protecting the gastrointestinal tract, and altering nutrient structures.
