Article Synopsis
  • Reconstruction of the neurovascular unit is crucial for healing spinal cord injuries (SCI), but research on specific vascular changes and treatments is still lacking.
  • A study shows that after SCI, significant vascular remodeling occurs, including larger blood vessels and damage to the blood-spinal cord barrier, influenced by osteopontin (OPN) that aids in early regeneration but also promotes pathological changes.
  • Targeting the mechanism of OPN by inhibiting Foxo1 phosphorylation can reduce harmful vascular changes, leading to better axon regeneration and recovery of neurological functions after SCI, suggesting new drug therapy approaches.

Parkinson's disease (PD) caused by gene triplication (3X) leads to early onset, rapid progression, and often dementia. Understanding the impact of 3X and its absence is crucial. This study investigates the differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived floor-plate progenitors into dopaminergic neurons.

Extra-nuclear and cytoplasmic steroid receptor signalling in hormone dependent cancers.

J Steroid Biochem Mol Biol

October 2024

Androgens in Health and Disease research group, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dublin, Ireland; Department of Surgery, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Ireland. Electronic address:

Steroid hormone receptors are key mediators in the execution of hormone action through a combination of genomic and non-genomic action. Since their isolation and characterisation in the early 20th Century much of our understanding of the biological actions of steroid hormones are underpinned by their activated receptor activity. Over the past two decades there has been an acceleration of more omics-based research which has resulted in a major uptick in our comprehension of genomic steroid action.

Article Synopsis
  • - Maternal aging (AMA) negatively impacts various aspects of blastocyst formation, including the size of pronuclei and cell organization during fertilization and compaction, as well as reducing the expansion of the blastocoel.
  • - Previous research has shown that AMA affects oocyte yield and embryo development, but the exact molecular mechanisms are not well understood, especially during the fertilization and pre-implantation stages.
  • - This study involved analyzing 2058 fertilized oocytes across different maternal age groups, examining the effects of AMA on embryo development through time-lapse culture systems and assessing the distribution of specific cell polarity markers.

Diverse function of the PISTILLATA, APETALA 3, and AGAMOUS-like MADS-box genes involved in the floral development in Alpinia hainanensis (Zingiberaceae).

Gene

September 2022

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Applied Botany, South China Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 510650, China. Electronic address:

Zingiberaceae is the vital clue and key node in the decreased process of fertile stamens in Zingiberales, helping to understand the evolution of the ginger families. This study focuses on Alpinia hainanensis to investigate the function of B- and C-class MADS-box genes in floral development. The introns size of two B-class genes AhPI and AhAP3, and one C-class gene AhAG are quite variable.
