Background And Aims: Endothelial cell-selective adhesion molecule (ESAM) is selectively expressed on vascular endothelium and is postulated to play a role in atherogenesis. We investigated the association of serum soluble ESAM (sESAM) levels with subsequent cardiovascular outcomes in patients with stable ischemic heart disease.
Methods: We measured sESAM levels in 981 patients with stable coronary disease enrolled between September 2000 and December 2002 in a prospective cohort study. Poisson regression models were used to define the relationship between baseline sESAM levels and cardiovascular outcomes, including myocardial infarction, heart failure hospitalization, and mortality.
Results: There were 293 occurrences of the composite endpoint over a median follow-up of 8.9 years. After adjusting for demographic and clinical risk factors, participants in the highest sESAM quartile (compared to the lower three sESAM quartiles) had a higher rate of the composite endpoint (incident rate ratio (IRR) 1.52 (95% CI 1.16-1.99) as well as of its individual components: myocardial infarction (IRR 1.64 (1.06-2.55)), heart failure hospitalizations (IRR 1.96 (1.32-2.81)), and death (IRR 1.5 (1.2-1.89)). These associations were no longer significant after adjustment for estimated glomerular filtration rate.
Conclusions: sESAM levels associate with myocardial infarction, heart failure, and death after adjustment for demographic and clinical risk factors, but not after adjustment for kidney function. sESAM may be involved in the pathogenesis of concurrent kidney and cardiovascular disease.

We have obtained what we believe to be the shortest fs tuning wavelength (1004 nm) from a Yb-based solid-state laser system. As the working horse, we have chosen Yb:YVO due to its blueshifted gain spectrum. While using a single 10 W 952 nm diode for pumping and a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) for mode-locking, we have achieved 266 fs long pulses with up to 1.

Background: Dementia poses a significant global health challenge. Anthocyanins neutralize free radicals, modulate signaling pathways, inhibit pro-inflammatory genes, and suppress cytokine production and may thus have positive cognitive effects in people at increased risk of dementia. We aim to investigate the effects of purified anthocyanins on cognitive function in people at increased risk of dementia according to their inflammation status based on blood-based inflammatory biomarkers.

This study aims to assess the level of metal contamination and the ecological risk index at the abandoned Zaida Pb/Zn mining site in eastern Morocco and identify native plant species found on the site that can be used in site rehabilitation through phytoremediation strategies. Samples from seven native and abundant plant species at the site, along with their rhizospheric soils, were collected and analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the concentrations of various metal(loid)s, including As, Cu, Ni, Cd, Sb, Zn, and Pb. Indicators of soil pollution and ecological risks were also assessed, including the enrichment factor (EF), pollution index (PI), and ecological risk index (ERI).

: Hip fractures pose a significant challenge for older individuals given their high incidence and one-year mortality rate. The objective of this study was to identify the primary predictors of one-year mortality in older adults hospitalized for hip fractures. We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving adults aged 70 years or older who were admitted to the hospital for fragility hip fractures between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2021.
