In this study, first-principles time-dependent density functional theory calculations were used to demonstrate the possibility to modulate the amplitude of the optical electric field (E-field) near a semiconducting graphene nanoribbon. A significant enhancement of the optical E-field was observed 3.34 Å above the graphene nanoribbon sheet, with an amplitude modulation of approximately 100 fs, which corresponds to a frequency of 10 THz. In general, a six-fold E-field enhancement could be obtained, which means that the power of the obtained THz is about 36 times that of incident UV light. We suggest the use of semiconducting graphene nanoribbons for converting visible and UV light into a THz signal.

Electric fields in terrestrial environments are used by caterpillars to detect their predators, as foraging cues by pollinators, and facilitate ballooning by spiders. This study shows that electric fields facilitate transportation and detection of hummingbirds in a guild of tropical phoretic mites. Hummingbird flower mites feed on nectar and pollen and complete their life cycle inside flowers.

Objective: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common side effect of chemotherapy and it is currently intractable We compared the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) against non-TEAS groups and investigated the variables that predict effective relief of upper extremity pain in cancer survivors with CIPN.
Methods: We retrospectively collected data of cancer survivors who developed CIPN between May 2017 to March 2022. All eligible CIPN patients were divided into TEAS group (received TEAS) and non-TEAS group (did not receive TEAS) in our department.
