Ascidians belong to tunicates, the sister group of vertebrates. Peripheral nervous systems (PNSs) including epidermal sensory neurons (ESNs) in the trunk and dorsal tail regions of ascidian larvae are derived from cells adjacent to the neural plate, as in vertebrates. On the other hand, peripheral ESNs in the ventral tail region are derived from the ventral ectoderm under the control of BMP signalling, reminiscent of sensory neurons of amphioxus and protostomes. In this study, we show that two distinct mechanisms activate a common gene circuit consisting of Msx, Ascl.b, Tox, Delta.b and Pou4 in the dorsal and ventral regions to differentiate ESNs. Our results suggest that ventral ESNs of the ascidian larva are not directly homologous to vertebrate PNSs. The dorsal ESNs might have arisen via co-option of the original PNS gene circuit to the neural plate border in an ancestral chordate.

Behaviorally conditioned immune functions are suggested to be regulated by bidirectional interactions between CNS and peripheral immune system the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, sympathetic nervous system (SNS), and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Since the current knowledge about biochemical pathways triggering conditioned immune enhancement is limited, the aim of this pilot study was gaining more insights into that. Rats were conditioned with camphor smell and poly I:C injection, mimicking a viral infection.

We report a case of a Chinese girl who presented with multiple seizure types of epilepsy, followed by motor and intellectual regression, vision impairment, and cerebral and cerebellar atrophy. She carries an unreported compound heterozygous variant of the ASAH1 gene and is diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy associated with progressive myoclonic epilepsy (SMA-PME), a disorder in which ceramide accumulation in lysosomes due to a decrease in acid ceramidase activity. This case suggests attention to this rare class of deceases involving both the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Aim: We aimed to evaluate real-world outcomes of peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) used to treat chronic neuropathic pain (CNP) at a tertiary pain management center.
Methods: Thirty adults who underwent PNS for CNP between June 2015 and September 2021 completed pain and psychosocial assessments in the 6 months before, and 2-3 years after PNS treatment. Pain intensity was measured using the NIH Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Pain Intensity Short From (3A).

Background: Meniere's disease arises when an abnormal fluid accumulation results in heightened pressure within the inner ear or labyrinth. Its symptoms encompass vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, and a sensation of fullness in the ear. Various triggers for Meniere's disease are known, from smoking and alcohol consumption to recent viral illnesses, allergies, and anxiety.

Introduction: In November 2018, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) restricted the use of fluoroquinolones (used by mouth, injections or inhalation) in the context of a referral due to long-lasting and potentially irreversible adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Fluoroquinolones should no longer be used to treat mild or moderate bacterial infections unless other antibacterials cannot be used.
Objectives: The first aim of our study was to analyze whether in the period before compared with after the referral the characteristics of spontaneous ADR reports related to fluoroquinolones differed and whether specific ADRs were more frequently reported for fluoroquinolones compared with cotrimoxazole.
