Thyroid dysfunction induces several renal derangements involving all nephron portions. Furthermore, dysthyroidism is a recognized risk factor associated with the development of chronic kidney disease. Current data, in fact, demonstrate that either subclinical or overt thyroid disease is associated with significant changes in creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate, measured glomerular filtration rate and Cystatin C. Herein, we systematically reviewed several relevant studies aiming at the identification of the most sensitive and specific parameter for the correct renal function evaluation in patients with thyroid dysfunction, that are usually treated as outpatients. Our systematic review indicates that estimated glomerular filtration rate, preferably with CKD-EPI equation, appears to be the most reliable and wieldy renal function parameter. Instead, Cystatin C should be better used in the grading of thyroid dysfunction severity.

Polyphenolic plant compounds possess nutritional and pro-healthy potential, reducing the risk of auto-inflammatory and neoplastic diseases. However, their interference with the progression of thyroid gland dysfunctions has remained largely unaddressed. For this purpose, we combined the analyses of phenolic content and antioxidative activity with the thyroid peroxidase (TPO), lipoxygenase (LOX), xanthine oxidase (XO) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity assays, isobolographic approach and the estimation of thyroid cancer cells' proliferation and motility in vitro.

Background: Overt hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are regarded as possible causes of reversible dementia. Evidence on the risk of dementia associated with subclinical thyroid dysfunctions is limited and barely existent in the very old, while findings are conflicting.
Objective: To cross-sectionally and longitudinally investigate the association of subclinical-hyperthyroidism and subclinical-hypothyroidism with dementia in a prospective population-based study of 80-years or older residents in Varese province, Italy (Monzino 80-plus Study).

Background: This study investigates the therapeutic versus side effects of intranasal lithium chloride (LiCl) in Ryanodex formulation vehicle (RFV) to inhibit inflammation and pyroptosis and to ameliorate on cognitive dysfunction and depressive behavior in 5XFAD mice.
Method: 5XFAD and wild type (WT) B6SJLF1/J mice were treated with intranasal or oral LiCl (3 mM/kg) dissolved in RFV starting at 2 or 9 months old and the continuous treatment lasted for 12 weeks. Behavior was examined for depression, cognition, olfaction, and motor function at the ages of 5 or 12 months.
