The reaction of hydrated lanthanoid chlorides with tribenzoylmethane and an alkali metal hydroxide consistently resulted in the crystallization of neutral tetranuclear assemblies with the general formula [Ln(Ae⋅HOEt)(L)4 ]2 (Ln=Eu(3+) , Er(3+) , Yb(3+) ; Ae=Na(+) , K(+) , Rb(+) ). Analysis of the crystal structures of these species revealed a coordination geometry that varied from a slightly distorted square antiprism to a slightly distorted triangular dodecahedron, with the specific geometrical shape being dependent on the degree of lattice solvation and identity of the alkali metal. The near-infrared (NIR)-emitting assemblies of Yb(3+) and Er(3+) showed remarkably efficient emission, characterized by significantly longer excited-state lifetimes (τobs ≈37-47 μs for Yb(3+) and τobs ≈4-6 μs for Er(3+) ) when compared with the broader family of lanthanoid β-diketonate species, even in the case of perfluorination of the ligands. The Eu(3+) assemblies show bright red emission and a luminescence performance (τobs ≈0.5 ms, ${{\Phi}{{{\rm L}\hfill \atop {\rm Ln}\hfill}}}$≈35-37 %, ηsens ≈68-70 %) more akin to the β-diketonate species. The results highlight that the β-triketonate ligand offers a tunable and facile system for the preparation of efficient NIR emitters without the need for more complicated perfluorination or deuteration synthetic strategies.

Perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology holds great promise with continuously improving power conversion efficiency; however, the use of metal electrodes hinders its commercialization and the development of tandem designs. Although single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), as one-dimensional materials, have the potential to replace metal electrodes in PSCs, their poor conductivity still limits their application. In this study, the near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing anionic heptamethine cyanine dye-doped SWCNTs functioned in a dual role as an efficient charge-selective layer and electrode in PSCs.

In situ activation of prodrugs or photosensitizers is a promising strategy for specifically killing tumor cells while avoiding toxic side effects. Herein, we originally develop a bioorthogonally activatable prodrug and pro-photosensitizer system to synchronously yield an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer and a chemotherapeutic drug for synergistic chemo-photodynamic-immunotherapy of tumors. By employing molecular engineering strategy, we rationally design a family of tetrazine-functionalized tetraphenylene-based photosensitizers, one of which (named TzPS5) exhibits a high turn-on ratio, a NIR emission, a typical AIE character, and an excellent ROS generation efficiency upon bioorthogonal-activation.

In this work, CaWO (CWO) phosphors were successfully synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state method, exhibiting an anomalous far-red/near-infrared (FR-NIR) emission centered at 685 nm. The origin of this FR-NIR emission is confirmed through Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and heterovalent cationic substitution (Y/Na → Ca). These analyses indicate that interstitial oxygen (O) defects within the lattice are primarily responsible for the FR-NIR emission.

Afterglow luminescence provides ultrasensitive optical detection by minimizing tissue autofluorescence and increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. However, due to the lack of suitable unimolecular afterglow scaffolds, current afterglow agents are nanocomposites containing multiple components with limited afterglow performance and have rarely been applied for cancer theranostics. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of oxathiine-containing donor-acceptor block semiconducting polymers (PDCDs) and the observation of their high photoreactivity and strong near-infrared (NIR) afterglow luminescence.
