Published: June 2015

Objective: To understand the implementation status and effect of prevention and control of malaria in Libo County, so as to provide the evidence for improving the malaria elimination working.

Methods: The data about malaria from the county CDC and county hospital were collected and 16 villages from 8 townships were randomly sampled and 10 villagers of each village were investigated. Other information about the prevention and control of malaria was also investigated.

Results: The incidence of malaria was decreasing annually, from 5.75 per 10,000 in 2008 to zero in 2012. The malaria monitoring could be well conducted in the county and township levels. The infection source could be controlled in time. The utilization rate of anti-mosquito facilities in the residents was 93.25% and the awareness rate of knowledge about malaria prevention and control was 40.13%.

Conclusions: The implementation and effect of prevention and control of malaria are satisfactory in Libo County, but the medium control is limited and the active protection consciousness of the residents is not strong. Therefore, the task of malaria elimination is still very arduous.

Purpose: To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of BEZ235, a dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor, in suppressing pathological neovascularization in an oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) mouse model and explore the role of cyclin D1 in endothelial cell cycle regulation.

Methods: Single-cell RNA sequencing was performed to analyze gene expression and cell-cycle alterations in retinal endothelial cells under normoxic and OIR conditions. The effects of BEZ235 on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs) were evaluated by assessing cell viability, cell-cycle progression, proliferation, migration, and tube formation.

Control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in the elderly: Is there a role for epigenetic reprogramming reversal?

Laboratorio BSL3, Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias Ismael Cosío Villegas, Ciudad de México, Mexico.

With the increase in the elderly population worldwide, the number of subjects suffering from tuberculosis (TB) has shown an increased prevalence in this group. Immunosenescence is essential in this phenomenon because it may reactivate the lesions and render their adaptive immunity dysfunctional. In addition, inflammation in the lungs of the elderly subjects is also dysfunctional.

This study aimed to model the current and future distribution of Ae.

Purpose: With the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines, there has been a proliferation of quantitative benefit-risk assessments (qBRAs). Prior work on other types of vaccines has found that published qBRAs have not always clearly reported methods and/or results needed to assist in the application of the qBRA findings. The aim was to systematically identify, review, and critically assess published COVID-19 vaccine qBRA.

Several bacterial pathogens employ haemophores to scavenge haem from host haemoprotein to obtain an iron source. However, no homologues of well-characterized haemophores are found in Riemerella anatipestifer, a bacterium belonging to the order Flavobacteriales that encodes haem uptake systems. Herein, a unique haemophore RhuH is characterized in this bacterium.
