Side chains containing two diacetylene units spaced by an odd number of methylene units exhibit pronounced “bumps” composed of 0.3 nm steps, in opposite directions, at odd and even side-chain positions. In densely packed self-assembled monolayers, the bis-diacetylene bumps stack into each other, similar to the stacking of paper cups. Bis-diacetylene side chain structure and associated packing constraints can be tailored by altering the bump width, direction, side-chain location, and overall side-chain length as a means to direct the identities and alignments of adjacent molecules within monolayers. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the solution–HOPG interface confirms the high selectivity and fidelity with which bis-diacetylene bump stacking directs the packing of shape-complementary side chains within one-component monolayers and within two-component, 1-D self-patterned monolayers. Drop cast or moderately annealed monolayers of anthracenes bearing two bis-diacetylene side chains assemble single domains as large as 10(5) nm2. Light-induced cross-linking of two-component, 1-D patterned monolayers generates linear polydiacetylene alternating copolymers (A-B-)x and 2-D grid polydiacetylene alternating copolymers (A(-B-)(-B-)A(-B-)(-B-))x that covalently lock in monolayer structure and patterns.

Diabetic wounds are usually entangled in a disorganized and self-perpetuating microenvironment and accompanied by a prolonged delay in tissue repair. Sustained and coordinated microenvironment regulation and tissue regeneration are key to the healing process of diabetic wounds, yet they continue to pose a formidable challenge. Here we report a rational double-layered dressing design based on chitosan and a degradable conjugated polymer polydiacetylene, poly(deca-4,6-diynedioic acid) (PDDA), that can meet this intricate requirement.

Chronic exposure to low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as chlorobenzene, is not being monitored in industrializing countries, although VOC exposure is associated with carcinogenic, organ-toxic, and endocrine-disrupting effects. Current VOC-sensing technologies are inaccessible due to high cost, size, and maintenance or are ineffective due to poor sensitivity or reliability. In particular, marginalized individuals face barriers to traditional prescription VOC treatments due to cost, lack of transportation, and limited access to physicians; thus, alternative treatments are needed.

Polydiacetylenes, as a class of conjugated polymers with alternating conjugated C═C and C≡C bonds, have emerged as a promising probe material for biomedical Raman imaging, given their ultrastrong Raman scattering intensity. However, the relationship between the structure, especially the molecular length of polydiacetylenes, and their Raman scattering intensity remains unclear. In this work, a series of water-soluble polydiacetylenes, namely poly(deca-4,6-diynedioic acid) (PDDA) with different molecular weights (MWs), is prepared through controlled polymerization and degradation.

Despite their clinical success, Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs) are still limited to the delivery of a handful of cytotoxic small-molecule payloads. Adaptation of this successful format to the delivery of alternative types of cytotoxic payloads is of high interest in the search for novel anticancer treatments. Herein, we considered that the inherent toxicity of cationic nanoparticles (cNP), which limits their use as oligonucleotide delivery systems, could be turned into an opportunity to access a new family of toxic payloads.

An ability to integrate adaptive coloration and tissue-like compositions, structures, as well as mechanical properties, and so forth into a material remains elusive. To address this problem, this work presents a solution whereby these features were integrated into a proteinic artificial skin through biomimetic design. In this artificial skin, silk fibroin was used to mimic the structural framework of the cytoskeleton due to its unique molecular network structure and outstanding and tunable mechanical properties.
