Article Synopsis
  • Societal concerns about animal welfare now include high-level sport horses, especially highlighted during recent Olympics, leading to public inquiries about their living conditions.
  • Animal welfare studies emphasize the "3Fs" for equine welfare: access to forage, freedom of movement, and social interactions, but the challenges for sport horses in meeting these needs are not well understood.
  • A field study assessing 56 high-level sport horses found significant variability in access to the "3Fs," showing that those with fewer restrictions had better welfare outcomes.

A systematic review of scientific evidence was conducted to derive observable, evidence-based behavioural measures of positive or negative affective state and factors relating to quality of life in the domestic horse (). Two separate searches (including the terms 'emotion/affect', or 'stress') were conducted, with 179 articles being retained.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study investigated the effectiveness of terbinafine in treating sporotrichosis in cats, as its efficacy had not been previously established.
  • - Out of 54 cats observed, only 10 were cured after an average of 18.5 weeks, with 18 treatment failures and some adverse reactions reported, including elevated liver enzymes.
  • - High drop-out rates during the study limit the ability to make definitive conclusions about terbinafine's effectiveness, leading to the conclusion that it may not be a reliable treatment for feline sporotrichosis.
