A novel approach for miRNA assay using a cationic polythiophene derivative, poly[3-(3'-N,N,N-triethylamino-1'-propyloxy)-4-methyl-2,5-thiophene hydrobromide] (PT), immobilized on a quartz resonator is proposed. The cationic PT enables capturing of all RNA sequences in the sample matrix via electrostatic interactions, resulting in the formation of PT-RNA duplex structures on quartz resonators. Biotinylated peptide nucleic acid (b-PNA) sequences are subsequently utilized for the RNA assay, upon monitoring the PT-RNA-b-PNA triplex formation. Signal amplification is achieved by anchoring avidin coated nanoparticles to b-PNA in order to yield responses at clinically relevant concentration regimes. Unlike conventional nucleic acid assay methodologies that usually quantify a specific sequence of RNA, the proposed approach enables the assay of any RNA sequence in the sample matrix upon hybridization with a PNA sequence complementary to the RNA of interest. As an illustration, successful detection of mir21, (a miRNA sequence associated with lung cancer) is demonstrated with a limit of detection of 400 pM. Furthermore, precise quantification of mir21 in plasma samples is demonstrated without requiring PCR and sophisticated instrumentation.

The electrochromic phenomenon of conducting polymer is mainly dominated by the π-π* band transition. The π conjugation is influenced by the coplanarity between polymer units, deviations from which can lead to an increased ionization potential and band gap values. In order to investigate the effect of plane distortion angle on electrochromic color in the main chain structure of polymerization, high-performance poly(3,3'-dimethyl-2,2'-bithiophene) (PDMeBTh) with a large plane distortion angle is successfully synthesized in boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BFEE) by the electrochemical anodic oxidation method.

Derivatives of polythiophene (PT) have garnered considerable attention in organic solar cells (OSCs) because of their relatively uncomplicated molecular structures and cost-effective synthesis. Herein, we have developed two regioisomeric fluorinated PT donors, PEI3T-FITVT and PEI3T-FOTVT, to realize efficient OSCs. PEI3T-FITVT and PEI3T-FOTVT are strategically designed with different fluorine atom arrangements on thiophene-vinyl-thiophene (TVT) units.

A new sulfur-containing carbon nanospheres encapsulated with vanadium oxide (V@SCN) is synthesized through a one-pot oxidation polymerization and then carbonization method. The prepared V@SCNs exhibit good dispersibility as a lubricant additive, which is owing to the inherited lipophilic organic functional groups in the sulfur-containing carbon shell derived from the carbonization of polythiophene. The agglomeration and precipitation of metals in the base oil are also avoided through the encapsulation of lipophilic carbon shells.

Strawberry anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum spp., is a devastating disease that significantly reduces strawberry yield and quality. This study aimed to develop a simple diagnostic method to detect infection by the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides complex (CGSC), the most predominant and virulent Colletotrichum species complex causing strawberry anthracnose in China.

-Trifluoromethylbenzene (FB) groups have been widely employed in various fields; however, no studies have reported the use of FB in side chains to enhance the carrier mobility and molecular doping of conjugated polymers. In this study, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we discovered that FB groups can effectively bind to [FeCl], the counterion of the p-type dopant FeCl, thereby increasing doping ability. Consequently, FB groups were incorporated into the side chains of thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole-based donor-acceptor (D-A)-conjugated polymers, and a series of random conjugated polymers were synthesized (denoted as PDPPFB-, where represents the molar ratio of the FB side chain).
