We describe the isolation and characterization of a cDNA for trout prolactin (tPrl). An extensive analysis of tPrl recombinant clones by restriction analysis and sequencing revealed the presence of only one form of tPrl mRNA. The deduced protein sequence consists of 210 amino acids, including a signal peptide of 23 amino acids. The amino acid sequence of the mature protein is compared among teleosts and mammals, showing two domains of strong similarity that may be involved in biological activity.

Prolactin has several immune functions in fish however, the effects on innate and specific components of rainbow trout immunity are currently unknown. Therefore in this study, prolactin peptide (pPRL) injection in rainbow trout generated anti-PRL antibodies that were confirmed through Western blot assays of fish brain tissue extract. At the same time, this group of fish was immunized with a viral antigen (VP2) and the specific antibody titer generated by the rainbow trout was subsequently determined, as well as the sero-neutralizing capacity of the antibodies.

We investigated the effects of tank brightness on body color, growth, and endocrine systems of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Five different tank colors that produce varying levels of brightness were used, including black, dark gray [DG], light gray [LG], white, and blue. The fish were reared in these tanks for 59 days under natural photoperiod and water temperature.

In the present study, we examined the trout gill cell line RTgill-W1 as a possible tool for in vitro investigation of epithelial gill function in fish. After seeding in transwells, transepithelial resistance (TER) increased until reaching a plateau after 1-2 days (20-80Ω⋅cm(2)), which was then maintained for more than 6 days. Tetrabromocinnamic acid, a known stimulator of TER via casein kinase II inhibition, elevated TER in the cell line to 125% of control values after 2 and 6h.
