AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to evaluate how Botulinum toxin A (BoNTA) affects skin flap viability in healthy, tobacco-exposed, and diabetic rats.
  • Rats were divided into six groups to assess the difference in survival area and arterial measurements after BoNTA or saline treatments.
  • Results showed that BoNTA improved skin flap viability in healthy and diabetic rats but had no impact on the tobacco-exposed group, with notable changes in arterial dimensions observed in the diabetic rats treated with BoNTA.

Article Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the effect of Botulinum toxin A (BoNTA) on skin flap viability in healthy, tobacco-exposed and diabetic rats.

Methods: Ninety male Wistar rats (250-300g) were randomly divided into six groups: control+saline (C1), control+BoNTA (C2), tobacco-exposed+saline (T1), tobacco-exposed+BoNTA (T2) diabetes+saline (D1) and diabetes+BoNTA (D2). A dorsal cutaneous flap (3×10cm) was performed. Survival area and total area of the flaps were measured. Lumen diameter, external arterial diameter and lumen/wall thickness ratio were recorded.

Results: Survival area increased in control group with BoNTA injection compared with control animals injected with saline (C2 x C1; 0.9±0.1 vs0.67±0.15, p= 0.001). A similar result was found in diabetes group injected with BontA (D2 x D1; 0.97±0.2 vs0.61±0.24, p=0.018). No difference was observed in skin flap viability in tobacco-exposed groups (T2 x T1; 0.74±0.24 vs 0.64±0.21, p=0.871). Lumen diameter (p= 0.004), external arterial diameter (p = 0.0046,) and lumen/wall thickness ratio (p= 0.003) were increased in diabetes+BoNTA-treated animals. This effect was not observed in control or in tobacco-exposed groups.

Conclusions: Botulinum toxin A increased skin flap viability in control and diabetic rats on the seventh post-operative day. Increased lumen diameter, external arterial diameter, and lumen/wall thickness ratio were observed in the diabetes+BoNTA group. BoNTA had no effect in the tobacco-exposed group on the seventh postoperative day.

Background: Previous computed tomography studies have reported that the superior mesenteric artery is often located ventrally to the superior mesenteric vein; however, the precise location of the peripheral jejunal arteriovenous system is unknown. This study investigated the arteriovenous positioning of the free jejunal flaps during reconstructive surgery.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 78 patients who underwent free jejunal flap reconstruction between June 2021 and May 2023.

This systematic review examines the impact of anatomical variations in the medial circumflex artery (MCA) on the outcomes of gracilis flap procedures in reconstructive surgery. Incorporating 16 studies, this review analyzes how different MCA variants influence the success rates of these procedures. Findings highlight critical MCA variations, including cases of split and double pedicles and differences in pedicle length and branching patterns, which can complicate flap harvesting and vascular anastomosis.

Background: Nasal cutaneous tumors impact appearance and function, affecting the patients' well-being. This study compares the outcomes of second intention healing, where wounds heal naturally, with flap transfer in nasal defect repair after tumor resection to evaluate its viability as an alternative.

Methods: In this multi-center study, 80 patients who underwent second intention healing and 70 patients who received flap transfer after nasal tumor resection between July 2018 and June 2023 were included.

Breast reconstruction with implants is now the preferred procedure following mastectomies. For successful reconstruction, accurate evaluation of the patient and skin flap viability is essential. This study aimed to analyze the impact of risk factors on mastectomy skin flap necrosis (MSFN) and the effectiveness of indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) in preventing complications.

Background: Surgical delay is any surgical intervention performed 7-14 days before flap elevation, separating part of flap from its vascular bed and aiming to decrease flap necrosis. However, delay surgery needs to be planned and performed as a separate surgical operation. Quercetin is a flavonoid with anti-inflammatory, and vasodilator effects.
