In this study, FLUENT software was used to simulate the flow regime of an integrated sludge thickening and digestion reactor. To optimize the flow regime, the combinational effect of key parameters of the reactor structure was investigated with an L16 (4(5)) orthogonal test. The reactor was then redesigned based on the optimization results, and a series of experiments was conducted to study the treatment effect with sludge dosage rates of 12, 18, 24, and 30%. The operation results showed that the reactor obtained the best treatment efficiency when the sludge dosage rate was 24%. At this dosage, the water content of the sludge decreased from 99.1% to 91.8%, with organic matter content (volatile solids [VS]/total solids) decreasing to 21.2% and average gas production (CH4 62.66%, CO2 11.56%, N2 23.91%, O2 1.59%) reaching 231.3 L/kg VS. Therefore, the results implied that the optimized reactor has good effects on sludge thickening and digestion.

The management of biological sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) poses a significant environmental challenge due to increasing sludge production and the presence of emerging pollutants. This study investigates an innovative solution by integrating a thermophilic aerobic membrane reactor (TAMR) into the sludge treatment line of a medium-size WWTP, aiming to minimize biological sludge output while enhancing resource recovery. The study involved a six-month monitoring of an industrial-scale TAMR system, assessing the reduction in volatile solids (VSs) in thickened sludge and evaluating the compatibility of TAMR residues with conventional activated sludge (CAS) systems.

The paper presents a proposal to modify a field method of testing the condition of activated sludge using a 30-min volume of sludge (settling test). To verify the validity of the modified method of testing the condition of activated sludge, field tests were performed in two onsite wastewater treatment plants. In these plants, the reaction chambers were fed by gravity from the primary sedimentation tank throughout the day.

Electronic address:

The presence of heavy metal(loid)s in sewage sludge is a cause of concern and an obstacle to its agricultural valorisation. This study analysed the elemental composition of sewage sludge from 42 Portuguese wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) during summer and winter, investigating heavy metal(loid) contamination, nutrient content, and potential risks related to sludge application to agricultural soils. Levels of 8 heavy metal(loid)s were investigated, ranging from not detected (Hg) to 5120 mg kg dw (Zn), decreasing in the order Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > As>Cd > Hg.

Despite advances in anaerobic digestion (AD), full-scale implementation faces significant challenges, particularly during the start-up phase, where inoculum selection is crucial. This study examines the impact of inoculum choice on the operational and economic performance of thermophilic digesters during the start-up phase. Methanogenic reactors R3 and R4 were inoculated with digested sludge (DiS) and diluted sewage sludge (DSS), respectively, and fed with hydrolyzed source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste (SS-OFMSW) and thickened sewage sludge, which were processed in R1 and R2, serving as acidogenic reactors.

The use of sewage sludge activated carbon (thickened samples ACS1 and non-thickened samples ACS2) in a variety of applications and simple environmentally friendly production techniques are attracting more and more attention. We offer here a novel environmentally friendly method based on the green synthesis of activated carbons (ACS1/ACS2) using sewage sludge (SS). These activated carbons are then used to effectively remove the water-based reactive dye phenol red (PR).
