In pursuit for new reactive materials designed for synthesis of functional resins, the novel core-shell type polymeric supports with accessible chloromethyl groups were synthesized. The commercial Amberlite XAD-4 adsorbent was impregnated with different mixtures of vinylbenzylchloride and divinylbenzene, that were further polymerized in the structure of the polymer carrier. The syntheses have been evaluated by recording FT-IR spectra, capturing SEM micrographs as well as analyzing the sorption and desorption of nitrogen at 77 K. The amount of the introduced functionalities has been estimated by chlorine content determination. Based on the obtained results, the reactive chloromethyl groups were successfully introduced into XAD-4 structure. Captured SEM micrographs revealed that VBC/DVB copolymer has covered initial polymeric matrix of XAD-4 adsorbent. Based on the results we have determined conditions of the synthesis that allow us to receive that effect.

Polyphenols from residual non-food grade have health-promoting effects in feed, food, or nutraceutical applications. Therefore, the isolation of polyphenols is of interest from a series of environmentally friendly isolation methods with recyclable solvents. The isolation of polyphenols from non-food grade was investigated using sequential membrane filtration with and without acid pretreatment, liquid-liquid extraction, resin adsorption, and centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC); analyzed by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay for total polyphenols; and finally analyzed using UPLC-TQMS in negative ion-spray mode for detection of 14 polyphenols.

New Mechanism via Dichlorocarbene Intermediate for Activated Carbon-Mediated Reductive Dechlorination of Carbon Tetrachloride by Sulfide in Aqueous Solutions.

Environ Sci Technol

October 2023

School of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Earth Surface Processes, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China.

Although activated carbon (AC) is widely used as an adsorbent and barrier for contaminated sediment remediation, little attention has been paid to its mediation effects on reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvents by commonly presenting sulfide. Here, we reported that highly porous, graphitized AC (250 mg L) suspended in deoxygenated aqueous solutions could increase the pseudo-first-order rate constant of sulfide-induced dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CCl) by more than 1 order of magnitude. Carbon disulfide (CS) was the only main product, with no production of chloroform or dichloromethane.

Amberlite XAD-4 is a convenient tool for removing Triton X-100 and Sarkosyl from protein solutions.

Biotechniques

January 2023

Department of Pharmacy & Biotechnology, University of Bologna, Viale Risorgimento 4, Bologna, 40136, Italy.

Amberlite has been shown to be an appropriate material for the adsorption of organic contaminants from aqueous solutions. In addition, Amberlite XAD-2 has been successfully used, as an alternative to Bio-Beads, to remove Triton X-100 from protein solutions, such as from samples of solubilized membrane proteins. However, Amberlite has not been tested as an adsorbent when a mixture of detergents is necessary to solubilize and refold a target protein.

Adsorption of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural, Levulinic Acid, Formic Acid, and Glucose Using Polymeric Resins Modified with Different Functional Groups.

ACS Omega

July 2021

School of Chemical Engineering and Light Industry, Guangdong University of Technology, No. 100 Waihuan Xi Road, Panyu District, Guangzhou 510006, People's Republic of China.

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a promising high value-added platform chemical, which can be produced from glucose, fructose, or lignocellulosic biomass via catalysis technology. However, the effective separation of 5-HMF from aqueous solution and actual biomass hydrolysate is still challenging because 5-HMF can be further rehydrated into levulinic acid (LA) and formic acid (FA) under acidic conditions. Herein, the adsorption behavior of glucose and 5-HMF and its follow-up products (LA and FA) from aqueous solutions onto polymeric adsorbents modified with various functional groups (XAD-4, XAD7HP, and XAD761 resins) was systematically investigated.
