The emergence of RNA viruses driven by global population growth and international trade highlights the urgent need for effective antiviral agents that can inhibit viral replication. Nucleoside analogs, which mimic natural nucleotides, have shown promise in targeting RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RdRps). Starting from protected 5-iodouridine, we report the synthesis of -substituted-(1,3-diyne)-uridines nucleosides and their phosphoramidate prodrugs.

Oxidative DNA Damage and Arterial Hypertension in Light of Current ESC Guidelines.

Int J Mol Sci

A new insight into oxidative stress is based on oxidative deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage. DNA is the pivotal biopolymer for life and health. Arterial hypertension (HT) is a globally common disease and a major risk factor for numerous cardiovascular (CV) conditions and non-cardiac complications, making it a significant health and socio-economic problem.

Proteomic Analysis of Biomarkers Predicting Treatment Response in Patients with Head and Neck Cancers.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2024

Department of Microbial Cellular and Molecular Biology, College of Natural and Computational Sciences, Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa 9086, Ethiopia.

Head and neck cancers (HNCs) are the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer and the eighth leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most prevalent type. The global incidence of HNCs is steadily increasing, projected to rise by approximately 30% per year by 2030, a trend observed in both developed and undeveloped countries. This study involved serum proteomic profiling to identify predictive clinical biomarkers in cancer patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy (CRT).

Introduction: Exposure to ambient air pollution from combustion-source emissions contributes to the prevalence of asthma, but the role of early-life exposure in asthma development is not well understood. The objective was to examine the effects of early-life exposure to multiple specific ambient air pollutants on incidence and prevalence of asthma and to determine the mechanistic basis for these effects.

Methods: The study included all live-born singletons in Denmark during 1998-2016 (N = 1,060,154), participants in the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC, N = 22,084), and participants in the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood (COPSAC, N = 803).

In sperm cells, protamine replaces histones to compact DNA 10-20 times more than in somatic cells. To characterize the extreme compaction, we employed confocal microscopy and optical tweezers to determine the conformations and stability of protamine-bound λ-DNA. Confocal images show increasing compaction of λ-DNA at increasing protamine concentration.
