Objective: This retrospective case-control study investigated cardiac dimensions and ventricular function in female adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) compared with controls.
Methods: Echocardiographic measurements of left ventricular (LV) dimensions, LV mass index, left atrial size and cardiac index were made. Detailed measures of systolic and diastolic ventricular function were made including tissue Doppler imaging. Patients were stratified by body mass index ≤10th percentile (AN ≤ 10th) and >10th percentile (AN > 10th).
Results: Ninety-five AN patients and 58 controls were included. AN and AN ≤ 10th groups had reduced LV dimensions, LV mass index, left atrial size and cardiac index compared with controls. There were no differences between groups in measures of systolic function. Measures of diastolic tissue Doppler imaging were decreased in AN and AN ≤ 10th. No differences in echocardiographic measurements existed between controls and AN > 10th.
Discussion: Female adolescents with AN have preserved systolic function and abnormalities of diastolic ventricular function. AN ≤ 10th may be a higher risk group.

Purpose: Research on the safety and efficacy of del Nido cardioplegia in adult patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is limited. We evaluated the effect of del Nido cardioplegia on early outcomes of cardiac surgery in this cohort.
Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched through August 2024 to conduct a meta-analysis comparing del Nido to other cardioplegia in adult patients with reduced LVEF (≤50%).

Severe mitral regurgitation (MR) following surgical repair of the mitral valve poses a significant clinical challenge. Patients who have undergone surgery are typically at high risk for a second operation. This report details the case of a 54-year-old male who underwent aortic valve replacement and mitral valve repair using a 34-ring, 14 years prior.

Cardiac myxomas are benign tumors of the heart. They occur mostly in the left atrium. The preferred treatment is surgical resection, which can be performed via conventional median sternotomy, minimally invasive, or robotic-assisted approaches.

Heart and lung sharing the same anatomical space are influenced by each other. Spontaneous breathing induces dynamic changes in intrathoracic pressure, impacting cardiac function, particularly the right ventricle. In intensive care units (ICU), mechanical ventilation (MV) and therefore positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) are often applied, and this inevitably influences cardiac function.

: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) poses a significant burden on the modern-day public health system; however, while our understanding of the underlying pathophysiology is still evolving and may not be complete, many insights are known and applied every day. Targeted prevention methods are continually being developed and refined. We conducted a systemic review and meta-analysis to identify a blood nutritional biomarker that can predict and screen population groups at high risk for cardiovascular disease mortality (CVD mortality) or SCD.
