Resolving power for the diffusion orientation distribution function.

Published: August 2016

Purpose: The diffusion orientation distribution function (dODF) is primarily used for white matter fiber tractography. Here the resolving power of the dODF is investigated for a simple diffusion model of two intersecting axonal fiber bundles.

Methods: The resolving power for the dODF is evaluated using the Sparrow criterion. This is determined for the exact dODF and also for q-space imaging (QSI), q-ball, and kurtosis approximations.

Results: Based on theoretical and numerical calculations, the resolving power is found to depend on the eigenvalues of the diffusion model and on the degree of radial weighting for the dODF. The resolving powers of the QSI and q-ball dODFs improve with increased b-value. The kurtosis dODF has a resolving power similar to that of the exact dODF.

Conclusion: The dODFs, whether exact or approximate, have finite resolving powers that limit their sensitivity to fiber crossings. The resolving powers for the different dODFs considered here provide convenient benchmarks for assessing and comparing their performance. We report the first implementation of ion mobility mass spectrometry combined with an ultra-high throughput sample introduction technology for high throughput screening (HTS). The system integrates differential ion mobility (DMS) with acoustic ejection mass spectrometry (AEMS), termed DAEMS, enabling the simultaneous quantitation of structural isomers that are the sub-strates and products of isomerase mediated reactions in intermediary metabolism. We demonstrate this potential by comparing DAEMS to a luminescence assay for the isoform of phosphoglycerate mutase (iPGM) distinctively present in pathogens offering an opportunity as a drug target for a variety of microbial and parasite borne diseases.

Background And Objectives: Primary colorectal lymphoma (PCL) is an infrequently occurring form of cancer, with the elderly population exhibiting an increasing prevalence of the disease. Furthermore, advanced age is associated with a poorer prognosis. Accurate prognostication is essential for the treatment of individuals diagnosed with PCL.

Purpose: We aim to understand the link between field-level institutional logics and practice-level social interactions and relationships between public and private actors and their influences on the responses and resolutions to the issues causing tensions.

Design/methodology/approach: Adopting a multiple logics perspective with a focus on social interactions and relationships between public and private actors, we conducted a multiple case study in five city hospitals recently established under a public-private partnership model in the Turkish healthcare field.

Findings: We found that the state and market logics that predominantly characterize the Turkish healthcare field were enacted in each of the five hospitals in different manners and constitute three different configurations as compatible, complementary and contradictory.

Introduction: A hybrid approach with very high-power short-duration (vHPSD) posteriorly and ablation-index guided HPSD (50 W) anteriorly seems to be an optimal balance between efficiency and effectiveness for point-by-point pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). The aim of the current study is to compare vHPSD/HPSD ablation to cryoballoon ablation (CBA) in patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF).

Methods And Results: In this retrospective single-center study, we identified 110 consecutive patients who underwent their first PVI with either vHPSD/HPSD (n = 54) or CBA (n = 56).

The concept of natural densitals (NDs) and their amplitudes is introduced. These quantities provide the spectral decomposition of the cumulant of the two-electron density that, by definition, quantifies the extent of electron correlation. Consequently, they are ideally suited for a rigorous description of electron correlation effects in Coulombic systems.
