Objective: The authors developed and measured the subsequent utilization of a web-based point-of-care information tool and meta-search filter, the University of Manitoba Psychiatry Toolkit, as well as conduct an evaluation of its impact on physicians' information seeking.

Methods: Evaluation entailed analysis of toolkit web page utilization data from user visits to the web-based toolkit, as well as an online survey distributed to psychiatrists and resident trainees to assess information gathering behaviors and attitudes regarding various sources of medical information.

Results: Electronic resources and colleagues were the preferred sources for gathering health information, while inadequate time and search skills were ranked as important barriers. Age and physician cadre influenced toolkit use. Majority of respondents used the Psychiatry Toolkit to answer a clinical question, and urgency of the clinical problem influenced their decision to use it.

Conclusions: The Psychiatry Toolkit assists psychiatrists and residents in finding answers to clinical questions arising at point-of-care, helping enhance the ongoing educational needs of physicians.

Status in Brain Gliomas Can Be Predicted by the Spherical Mean MRI Technique.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery and Neurooncology (M.M., A.B., T.M., D.K., D.N.), First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and Military University Hospital, Prague, Czech Republic.

Background And Purpose: Diffuse gliomas, a heterogeneous group of primary brain tumors, have traditionally been stratified by histology, but recent insights into their molecular features, especially the mutation status, have fundamentally changed their classification and prognosis. Current diagnostic methods, still predominantly relying on invasive biopsy, necessitate the exploration of noninvasive imaging alternatives for glioma characterization.

Materials And Methods: In this prospective study, we investigated the utility of the spherical mean technique (SMT) in predicting the status and histologic grade of adult-type diffuse gliomas.

Addressing Perinatal Mood and Anxiety disorders in Obstetric Settings: Results of a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial of Two Approaches.

Am J Obstet Gynecol MFM

January 2025

University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Population and Quantitative Health Sciences; UMass Memorial Health Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology(2), Worcester, MA.

Article Synopsis
  • Mood and anxiety disorders affect one in five perinatal individuals, yet they are often not adequately treated due to various barriers in obstetric practices. To improve this situation, implementation assistance and an e-learning toolkit were developed for obstetric clinicians.
  • The main goal was to assess how these resources impacted the screening and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders compared to usual care by conducting a cluster randomized controlled trial across 13 obstetric practices in the U.S.
  • Results showed that there were no significant differences at baseline in mental health screening documentation among the groups, indicating a need for enhanced strategies in documenting and addressing these disorders effectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The traditional neuroimaging research relies on inferential statistics to identify significant effects, but precision medicine demands a predictive modeling approach that enhances generalizability and predictive accuracy.
  • Existing tools for analyzing lesion-behavior often require different software for different data types and problem types, limiting researchers' flexibility and efficiency.
  • A new MATLAB software toolkit has been developed to unify inferential and predictive modeling, supporting various analysis types without restrictions on data modality, and includes features for model optimization and evaluation.

Background: Mobile devices for remote monitoring are inevitable tools to support treatment and patient care, especially in recurrent diseases such as major depressive disorder. The aim of this study was to learn if machine learning (ML) models based on longitudinal speech data are helpful in predicting momentary depression severity. Data analyses were based on a dataset including 30 inpatients during an acute depressive episode receiving sleep deprivation therapy in stationary care, an intervention inducing a rapid change in depressive symptoms in a relatively short period of time.
