Objective: The purpose of this case study was to demonstrate hearing preservation of a subject who was implanted with a 10-mm short electrode cochlear implant that was determined to be malfunctioning at 6 months postimplantation and was explanted and reimplanted with a 16-mm short electrode device.Study Design: Single-subject case study.Setting: Research hospital.Patient: A 60-year old female with a history of gradual progressive bilateral steeply sloping sensorineural hearing loss.Intervention: Rehabilitative.Main Outcome Measure(s): Audiometric data and speech perception in quiet and in noise were collected pre- and postoperatively at 3 and 6 months with the 10-mm short electrode device and pre-explantation and postoperatively at 3, 6, and 12 months with the 16-mm short electrode device. Results: Functional hearing preservation was accomplished following surgical implantation of both short electrode devices. Overall, the subject had a 22 dB HL total shift in pure-tone-average (0.125–1 kHz) after two cochlear implant surgeries. Speech perception growth was limited over the 6 months the subject was implanted with the 10-mm short electrode device. After 3 months of experience with the 16-mm short electrode device, the subject experienced significant improvements in both speech perception in quiet and in noise. Conclusions: The inner ear might be more robust than once thought, as was determined through preservation of residual hearing after implantation of two hearing preservation cochlear implants and one device explantation. Furthermore, it is important that hearing professionals remain cognizant of unusual speech perception patterns associated with the cochlear implant. Key Words: Hearing preservation—Residual hearing—Short electode. [Corrected]

The development of universal electrochemical sensing platforms with high sensitivity and specificity is of great significance for advancing practical disease diagnostic methods and devices. Exploring the structural properties of electrode materials and their interaction with biomolecules is essential to developing novel and distinctive analytical approaches. Here, we innovatively investigated the effect of DNA length and configuration on DNA molecule transfer into the nanostructure of a nanoporous gold (NPG) electrode.

Background: Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is a kind of scanning probe technology that enables the obtainment of surface morphology and electrochemical information by recording changes in Faraday current triggered by the movement of probe.

Results: In this work, flexible disk ultramicroelectrode (UME) with highly repeatable geometry are fabricated through a simple and universal strategy that involves vacuum pulling the glass capillaries inserted with platinum wire (gold wire, carbon fiber, etc.), followed by a rapidly heated sealing and polishing process.

Pronouns create cohesive links in discourse by referring to previously mentioned elements. Here, we focus on pronominalization during speech production in three experiments employing ERP and fMRI methodologies. Participants were asked to produce two short sentences describing a man or woman using an object.

The finger photoplethysmography fitness index (PPGF), a marker of peripheral vascular function, has been linked to heart rate (HR) variability. However, the influence of acute HR changes on resting PPGF, a purported indicator of local blood flow, remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the influence of acute HR changes on resting PPGF.

Vertical organic electrochemical transistors (vOECTs) have received widespread attention in bioelectronics, wearable, and neuromorphic electronics due to their high transconductance (), low driving voltage, and biocompatibility. As key parameters of vOECTs, and switching speed (or transient time, τ) are vital for achieving satisfying performance in various practical applications. Here we employ vOECTs with varying top electrode widths for effective and switching speed modulation.
