Past research has demonstrated the association between social engagement and the maintenance of cognitive abilities. However, inconsistent definitions of social engagement have posed challenges to systematically investigate this association. This paper addresses the role of social relationships in cognitive functioning among older adults, focusing on the real-life communication indicator-length of own speech-as a measure of social activity.

The purpose of this paper is to describe ongoing research on appropriate instrumentation and analysis techniques to characterize postural stability, postural agility, and dynamic stability, which collectively comprise the postural control spectrum. This study had a specific focus on using emerging sensors to develop protocols suitable for use outside laboratory or clinical settings. First, we examined the optimal number and placement of wearable accelerometers for assessing postural stability.

Background: Unobtrusive observation is a promising method for assessing physical activity and other well-being behaviors (eg, social interactions) in urban environments, without participant burden and biases associated with self-report. However, current methods require multiple in-person observers. Using video cameras instead could allow for more accurate observations at lower cost and with greater flexibility in scheduling.
