CDC20 and CDH1 are well-established substrate receptors for the Anaphase Promoting Complex/Cyclosome (APC/C). In this issue of Molecular Cell, Lee et al. (2015) show that these adaptors can also target cell cycle proteins for destruction through a second ubiquitin ligase, Parkin.

Two-dimensional materials show great potential for future electronics beyond silicon materials. Here, we report an exotic multiple-port device based on multiple electrically tunable planar p-n homojunctions formed in a two-dimensional (2D) ambipolar semiconductor, tungsten diselenide (WSe). In this device, we prepare multiple gates consisting of a global gate and several local gates, by which electrostatically induced holes and electrons are simultaneously accumulated in a WSe channel, and furthermore, at the boundaries, p-n junctions are formed as directly visualized by Kelvin probe force microscopy.

Early warning COVID-19 outbreak in long-term care facilities using wastewater surveillance: correlation, prediction, and interaction with clinical and serological statuses.

Lancet Microbe

October 2024

Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada; School of Public Health, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada; Edmonton Zone, Alberta Health Services, Edmonton, AB, Canada.

Background: The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the strategic value of wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) of SARS-CoV-2. This multisite 28-month-long study focused on WBS for older residents in 12 long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Edmonton (AB, Canada) by assessing relationships between COVID-19, WBS, and serostatus during the pandemic.

Methods: Wastewater samples collected two to three times per week were tested for SARS-CoV-2 using RT-quantitative PCR.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study introduces a new technique involving the twisting of two bilayers of the 2D antiferromagnet CrSBr to create all-antiferromagnetic tunnel junctions, achieving an impressive over 700% tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio at zero field.
  • * The research also reveals that the TMR depends on the twist angle between the bilayers, and surprisingly, twisted junctions exhibit a weaker temperature dependence compared to untwisted ones, enhancing their potential for use in efficient

The synthesis, crystal structure, and a Hirshfeld surface analysis of tris-{,-diethyl-'-[(4-nitro-phen-yl)(oxo)meth-yl]carbamimido-thio-ato}cobalt(III) conducted at 180 K are presented. The complex consists of three ,-diethyl-'-[(4-nitro-benzene)(oxo)meth-yl]carbamimido-thio-ato ligands, threefold sym-metric-ally bonded about the Co ion, in approximately octa-hedral coordination, which generates a triple of individually near planar metallacyclic (Co-S-C-N-C-O) rings. The overall geometry of the complex is determined by the mutual orientation of each metallacycle about the crystallographically imposed threefold axis [dihedral angles = 81.

Weyl spin-momentum locking in a chiral topological semimetal.

Nat Commun

May 2024

Max Planck Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, 06120, Halle, Germany.

Spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric crystals leads to spin-momentum locking - a directional relationship between an electron's spin angular momentum and its linear momentum. Isotropic orthogonal Rashba spin-momentum locking has been studied for decades, while its counterpart, isotropic parallel Weyl spin-momentum locking has remained elusive in experiments. Theory predicts that Weyl spin-momentum locking can only be realized in structurally chiral cubic crystals in the vicinity of Kramers-Weyl or multifold fermions.
