3-Furylfulgides are photochromic compounds showing high thermal stability in their closed forms. However, their photochromic properties in the solid state should be improved further to fabricate molecular devices. Understanding how the size and the flexibility of the non-aromatic alkylidene moiety alter the crystalline state photochromic properties is also important here, as the alkylidene group is directly involved in the photochromic ring closing and opening reactions. The synthesis of four 3-furylfulgides composed of different alkylidene groups (rigid isopropyl, flexible 2-butyl, rigid cyclopentyl and flexible cyclohexyl), their crystal structures and structure-photochromic property correlation in the crystalline state are reported here. Crystallographic data along with reaction cavity volumes calculated using the program CAVITY [Ohashi et al. (1981), J. Am. Chem. Soc. 103, 5805-5812] disclosed that fulgides with flexible groups at the ring closing site have more free volume around the reactive area in the crystal lattice, which can provide more space for the atomic movements in the reaction and flexibility can reduce the strain built up in the closed C-isomers by making conformations. According to UV-vis spectroscopic data, a higher yield of C-isomers and a better fatigue resistance were obtained for the 3-furylfulgide with the largest and flexible cyclohexyl group showing greater photochromic properties in the crystalline state than the fulgide containing the smallest and rigid isopropyl group.

The construction of heterostructures promotes extending the light adsorption range of graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) materials, improving the photogenerated charge carrier separation/transfer efficiency for attaining much enhanced performances. Because defective tungsten oxide (WO) materials possess rich composition/morphology and an extended light response in the near-infrared region, WO is a quite popular nanocomponent for modifying g-CN, forming heterostructures that can be used for various photocatalytic applications involving water splitting, CO reduction, NO removal, HO generation, and related chemical to fuel conversion reactions. In this review, important aspects of WO/g-CN heterostructure photocatalysts are reviewed to provide paradigms for composition adjustment, structural design, and photocatalytic applications of these materials.

In this study, the first attempt is made to implement conjugated polymer-based self-assembled monolayer (SAM), poly[3-(6-carboxyhexyl) thiophene-2,5-diyl] (P3HT-COOH), is implemented as the hole transport layer (HTL) in fabricatiing organic photovoltaics (OPVs). The scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results show that those P3HT-COOH molecules with periodic carboxylic acid anchoring groups pack periodically on the indium tin oxide (ITO) surface and form a monolayer. Further, this monolayer is smooth and dense with a polar feature that minimizes defects, forms an excellent interface with the photoactive layer, and tunes the work function of ITO beneficial for hole extraction.

The Coulomb electric field formed between positive and negative charges always restricts the generation and separation of photo-irradiated electrons and holes, resulting in the limited CO photoreduction performances of catalysts. Herein, the defect engineering and high-entropy strategies are used to regulate the crystallinity of CsNaInCl perovskite materials, thus resulting in an enhanced internal polarization electric field, which overcame the Coulomb electric field and promoting the separation process of charge carriers. Moreover, the CsNa{InPrSmGdTb}Cl with Cl vacancies is prepared using the low-temperature syntheses, which overcame the challenge of extremely high-temperature requirements for high entropy alloy preparation.

Background: Influenza, a seasonal infectious disease, has consistently posed a formidable challenge to global health in recent years. Favipiravir, an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase inhibitor, serves as an anti-influenza medication, currently administered solely in oral form for clinical use. However, achieving an effective therapeutic outcome often necessitates high oral doses, which can be accompanied by adverse effects and suboptimal patient adherence.

In this study, the impact of lentil hull soluble dietary fibers (SDFs) on colitis and behavioral deficits in mice was assessed. Structural characterizations of SDFs confirmed that cellulase-modified soluble dietary fiber exhibited better physicochemical properties: more porous microstructure; similar polysaccharide structure; more stable particle size distribution; higher crystallinity; better adsorption capacity; and lower viscosity. Additionally, we explored its potential cognitive benefits via the gut-brain axis by behavioral tests, histopathology, 16S rRNA sequencing, gas chromatography and metabolomics analysis.
