When death certificates already completed are submitted during forensic post-mortem examinations or autopsies, blatant errors are often found, especially with regard to the classification of the manner of death. This is partly attributable to insufficient knowledge of the classification criteria, but also to the fact that the post-mortem examination was not properly performed and even clear signs of unnatural death (e.g. a strangulation mark or sharp force injuries) are overlooked. To avoid such misinterpretations, a thorough reformation of the post-mortem examination system and a regular continuing specialized training of the physicians performing post-mortems seem necessary.

Forensic investigation of intrauterine and perinatal deaths can be challenging, given their relative infrequency and the possible involvement of maternal substance use, trauma, and socioeconomic factors. Intrauterine and perinatal deaths investigated by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Officer between 2013-2023 were reviewed. One hundred twenty-eight cases were identified (83 stillborn and 45 live births).

Ischemic stroke is a major cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Among patients with ischemic stroke, the primary treatment goal is to reduce acute cerebral ischemic injury and limit the infarct size in a timely manner by ensuring effective cerebral reperfusion through the administration of either intravenous thrombolysis or endovascular therapy. However, reperfusion can induce neuronal death, known as cerebral reperfusion injury, for which effective therapies are lacking.

Background: Lidocaine is a traditional local anesthetic, which has been reported to trigger apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway, independent of death receptor signaling. Cuproptosis is a copper triggered mitochondrial cell death mode. In this study, we explored the biological effects of lidocaine on cuproptosis in Hep-2 cells and studied the relevant mechanisms.

Sarcoglycanopathies are heterogeneous proximo-distal diseases presenting severe muscle alterations. Although there are 6 different sarcoglycan isoforms, sarcoglycanopathies are caused exclusively by mutations in genes coding for one of the four sarcoglycan transmembrane proteins (alpha, beta, gamma and delta) forming the sarcoglycan complex (SGC) in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Little is known about the different roles of the SGC beyond the dystrophin glycoprotein complex (DGC) structural role.

Gabapentin (GBP), a pharmaceutical widely used for seizures and neuropathic pain, has emerged as a contaminant in global aquatic environments, raising concerns about its ecological impact. This study investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of GBP (0, 1, 10, 1000 μg/L) on visual development in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Behavioral assays showed that GBP exposure enhanced light sensitivity, as indicated by a significant increase in total travel distance (TTD) in all exposure groups compared to controls.
