AI Article Synopsis

  • The phosphorylation of 4E-BP2 changes its structural and functional properties, impacting how it folds.
  • This process reveals a balance between energy favorability and structural challenges.
  • New evidence suggests that proteins near disorder have different "fitness landscapes" (how they function and maintain stability) compared to more organized proteins.

Article Abstract

We show that the phosphorylation of 4E-BP2 acts as a triggering event to shape its folding-function landscape that is delicately balanced between conflicting favorable energetics and intrinsically unfavorable topological connectivity. We further provide first evidence that the fitness landscapes of proteins at the threshold of disorder can differ considerably from ordered domains.

Brain signaling becomes less integrated and more segregated with age.

Netw Neurosci

Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY, USA.

The integration-segregation framework is a popular first step to understand brain dynamics because it simplifies brain dynamics into two states based on global versus local signaling patterns. However, there is no consensus for how to best define the two states. Here, we map integration and segregation to order and disorder states from the Ising model in physics to calculate state probabilities, and , from functional MRI data.

Syntheses and properties of energetic -pentazolate cocrystals.

As a new type of polynitrogen species that is stable at room temperature, the pentazolate anion (-N) has attracted much attention in the field of high-energy density materials, but its energy and stability are unbalanced. Cocrystallisation can balance their properties to some extent by forming new chemical compositions from existing -N compounds through non-covalent interactions. This article reviews the research progress of -N cocrystals in recent years, including synthetic methods, cocrystals of metal-N compounds, and cocrystals of nonmetallic pentazolate salts.

Energetics of Oligosaccharide Adsorption on Ionic Liquid-Clay Composites.

Well-Tempered Metadynamics (WT-MetaD) simulations indicate that composite materials made up of Na-Montmorillonite (Na-MMT) coated with ionic liquids (ILs) having hydrophilic cations serve as good adsorbents for a hexameric (1,4) linked β-D-glucopyranoside (BGLC). Hydrophilic IL cations are effectively coated on the negative charges lining the Na-MMT surface while attracting simultaneously the polar oligosaccharides. In this work we have used two less conventional polyethylene glycol (PEG) based IL cations, [mim peg] and [mim peg], paired with [tfN] and Cl anions.

Exploring single-atom (SA) catalysts in hybrid urea-assisted water electrolysis offers a viable alternative to both Hydrogen (H) generation and polluted water treatment. However, the unfavorable electronic stabilization, low SA content, intrinsically slow kinetics, and imbalanced adsorption-desorption steps are the bottleneck for its scale-up implementation. Herein, a rare-earth Terbium single atom (Tb) is topologically stabilized on defect-rich CoO (Tb@d-CoO) by Tb─O co-ordination for urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and H evolution reaction (HER).

This Letter presents a theory of interaction-induced band-flattening in strongly correlated electron systems. We begin by illustrating an inherent connection between flat bands and index theorems, and presenting a generic prescription for constructing flat bands by periodically repeating local Hamiltonians with topological zero modes. Specifically, we demonstrate that a Dirac particle in an external, spatially periodic magnetic field can be cast in this form.
