The next generation of deformable and shape-conformable electronics devices will need to be powered by batteries that are not only flexible but also foldable. Here we report a foldable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) rechargeable battery, with the highest areal capacity (∼3 mAh cm(-2)) reported to date among all types of foldable energy-storage devices. The key to this result lies in the use of fully foldable and superelastic carbon nanotube current-collector films and impregnation of the active materials (S and Li) into the current-collectors in a checkerboard pattern, enabling the battery to be folded along two mutually orthogonal directions. The carbon nanotube films also serve as the sulfur entrapment layer in the Li-S battery. The foldable battery showed <12% loss in specific capacity over 100 continuous folding and unfolding cycles. Such shape-conformable Li-S batteries with significantly greater energy density than traditional lithium-ion batteries could power the flexible and foldable devices of the future including laptops, cell phones, tablet computers, surgical tools, and implantable biomedical devices.

The widespread adoption of Li-ion batteries is currently limited by their unstable electrochemical performance and high flammability under mechanical deformation conditions and a relatively low energy density. Herein, high-energy-density lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are developed for applications in next-generation flexible electronics and electric vehicles with long cruising distances. Freestanding high-S-loading carbon nanotubes cathodes are assembled with a phosphorus (P)-doped carbon interlayer coated on commercial separators.

Single-atom metal catalysts (SACs) are used as sulfur cathode additives to promote battery performance, although the material selection and mechanism that govern the catalytic activity remain unclear. It is shown that d-p orbital hybridization between the single-atom metal and the sulfur species can be used as a descriptor for understanding the catalytic activity of SACs in Li-S batteries. Transition metals with a lower atomic number are found, like Ti, to have fewer filled anti-bonding states, which effectively bind lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and catalyze their electrochemical reaction.

Poor cycling stability and low volumetric capacity of sulfur cathode prevents practical application of Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to address the two drawbacks of sulfur cathode by synthesizing a compact and flexible film cathode with bilayer structure using a two-step vacuum filtration method. Two layers make up the sulfur cathode, active layer (sulfur-acethlene black (SC) spheres) and barrier layer (three dimensional MnO-graphene oxide-multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MnO-GO-CNTs) composites), which are integrated together by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) through self-binding.

Foldable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have captured considerable interest in advanced flexible energy storage systems. However, sulfur utilization, cycling stability, and mechanical durability are still not satisfactory for flexible batteries with high sulfur loadings. Herein, we present one type of new freestanding electrode material derived from a thiourea-based covalent organic gel (COG).

Flexible batteries have become an indispensable component of emerging devices, such as wearable, foldable electronics and sensors. Although various flexible batteries have been explored based on one-dimensional and two-dimensional platforms, developing a high energy density electrode with high structural integrity remains challenging. Herein, a scalable, one-pot wet spinning strategy is used to synthesize a flexible porous cathode for lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) for the first time, which consists of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), graphene crumples (GCs) and sulfur powders.
