The Role of Detraining in Tendon Mechanobiology.

Front Aging Neurosci

March 2016

Laboratory of Biocompatibility, Technological Innovations and Advanced Therapies, RIT Department, Rizzoli Orthopedic InstituteBologna, Italy; Laboratory of Preclinical and Surgical Studies, Rizzoli Orthopedic InstituteBologna, Italy.

Introduction: Several conditions such as training, aging, estrogen deficiency and drugs could affect the biological and anatomo-physiological characteristics of the tendon. Additionally, recent preclinical and clinical studies examined the effect of detraining on tendon, showing alterations in its structure and morphology and in tenocyte mechanobiology. However, few data evaluated the importance that cessation of training might have on tendon.

Background: Athletes commonly sustain injuries to the triceps surae muscle-tendon unit. The calf-raise test (CRT) is frequently employed in sports medicine for the detection and monitoring of such injuries. However, despite being widely-used, a recent systematic review found no universal consensus relating to the test's purpose, parameters, and standard protocols.

In spite of the complexity of human motor behavior, difficulties in mathematical modeling have restricted to rather simple movements attempts to identify the motor planning criterion used by the central nervous system. This paper presents a novel-simulation technique able to predict the "desired trajectory" corresponding to a wide range of kinematic and kinetic optimality criteria for tasks involving many degrees of freedom and the coordination between goal achievement and balance maintenance. Employment of proper time discretization, inverse dynamic methods and constrained optimization technique are combined.

[Hydrocephalus with cerebrospinal fluid shunts and pregnancy: 2 cases].

J Gynecol Obstet Biol Reprod (Paris)

March 1993

Service de Gynécologie-Obstétrique, Maternité du Pavillon Victor-Olivier, CHU, Lille.

During pregnancy 50% of all cases with a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt malfunction. This is because of anatomo-physiological changes associated with the pregnant state, and shows itself as a rise in intracranial tension. There were no acute neurological complications at term; with the malfunction of the shunt distally, vaginal delivery is preferable.
