Pompe disease is a neuromuscular disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme acid alpha-glucosidase (), which leads to lysosomal glycogen accumulation and progressive development of muscle weakness. Two distinct isoforms have been identified. In the infantile form, the weakness is often severe and leads to motor difficulties from the first few months of life.

Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is an effective intervention for patients with severe obesity and metabolic comorbidities, particularly when non-surgical weight loss methods prove insufficient. MBS has shown significant potential for improving quality of life and metabolic health outcomes in individuals with obesity, yet it carries inherent risks. Although these procedures offer a multifaceted approach to obesity treatment and its clinical advantages are well-documented, the limited understanding of its long-term outcomes and the role of multidisciplinary care pose challenges.

Efficiency demands that we work smarter and not harder, but is this better for our wellbeing? Here, we ask if exerting effort on a task can increase feelings of meaning and purpose. In six studies (N = 2883), we manipulated how much effort participants exerted on a task and then assessed how meaningful they found those tasks. In Studies 1 and 2, we presented hypothetical scenarios whereby participants imagined themselves (or others) exerting more or less effort on a writing task, and then asked participants how much meaning they believed they (or others) would derive.
