The optimal morphology of nanotextured interfaces, which increase the photocurrent density of thin-film solar cells, is still an open question. While random morphologies have the advantage to scatter light into a broad angular range, they are more difficult to assess with Maxwell solvers, such as the finite-element method (FEM). With this study we aim to identify necessary requirements on the unit cell design for the accurate simulation of nanotextured thin-film solar cells with FEM.

Modification of the Se/MoO Rear Interface for Efficient Wide-Band-Gap Trigonal Selenium Solar Cells.

Trigonal selenium (t-Se) is a promising wide-band-gap photovoltaic material with a high absorption coefficient, abundant resources, simple composition, nontoxicity, and a low melting point, making it suitable for absorbers in advanced indoor and tandem photovoltaic applications. However, severe electrical losses at the rear interface of the t-Se absorber, caused by work function and lattice mismatches, limit the voltage output and overall performance. In this study, a strategy to enhance carrier transport and collection by modifying interfacial chemical interactions is proposed.

Tailoring selenization dynamics: How heating rate manipulates nucleation and growth boosts efficiency in kesterite solar cells.

Kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) has emerged as a promising photovoltaic material due to its low cost and high stability. The CZTSSe film for high-performance solar cells can be obtained by annealing the deposited CZTS precursor films with selenium (a process known as selenization). The design of the selenization process significantly affects the quality of the absorber layer.

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have been developed rapidly for application in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, solar cells, photodetectors and other fields in recent years due to their excellent photoelectronic properties, and they have attracted the attention of many researchers. Perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) show great promise for next-generation lighting and display technologies, and the external quantum efficiency (EQE) values of polycrystalline thin-film PeLEDs exceed 20%, which is undoubtedly a big breakthrough in lighting and display fields. However, the toxicity and instabilities of lead-based MHPs remain major obstacles limiting their further commercial applications.

Gradient Surface Gallium-Doped Hematite Photoelectrode for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation.

Nano Lett

January 2025

Institute of Photoelectronic Thin Film Devices and Technology, State Key Laboratory of Photovoltaic Materials and Cells, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Efficient Solar Energy Utilization, Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center of Thin Film Photoelectronic Technology, Nankai University, 300350 Tianjin, China.

Hematite is a promising material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation, but its photocurrent is limited by bulk charge recombination and poor oxidation kinetics. In this study, we report a high-performance FeO photoanode achieved through gradient surface gallium doping, utilizing a GaO overlayer on FeOOH precursors via atomic layer deposition (ALD) and co-annealing for Ga diffusion. The Ga-doped layer passivates surface states and modifies the band structure, creating a built-in electric field that enhances the charge separation efficiency.
