Chondrosarcoma of the hand is a rare disease, but is one of the more common malignancies of the hand. Biopsies and imaging are a fundamental step in determining correct diagnosis, grading and selection for best treatment. We describe the case of a 77-year-old male complaining of a painless swelling in the proximal phalanx of the third ray of left hand.

Reconstruction is very important to ensure good function and quality of life after bone tumor resection. For metacarpals and phalanges, amputation and toe transfer are the gold-standard indications; nevertheless, allograft reconstruction must also be taken into account. Unfortunately, because of its inert biological behavior, it undergoes progressive resorption, with frequent fracture.

We report an unusual case of a 46-year-old man with a huge chondrosarcoma on his left hand that has been evolving for more than 30 years. The mass has always been painless, the symptoms were only the deformation and a slight loss of motion.

Background: Chondrosarcomas of the small bones of the hands and feet are uncommon and account for less than 2% of all chondrosarcomas in the skeleton; a 4.2% rate of malignant degeneration of enchondromas to secondary chondrosarcomas has been reported. We performed this study to assess the outcome of the patients with chondrosarcomas of the small bones.
