The technique of immunoelectrophoresis was used to determine the age of bloodstains. The immunoelectrophoretic patterns (IEP) of bloodstains ranging from 15 days to one year old were obtained by the use of high titer anti-whole human serum. The IEPs revealed gradual disappearance of beta-globulins and gamma-globulin with increase in the age of bloodstains. A comparative study of the IEP of normal human serum with those of the experimental bloodstains showed the absence of some of the corresponding proteins. The absence of a particular serum protein in the IEP of a given bloodstain will indicate the age of that bloodstain.

Glial-vascular interactions are critical for the formation and maintenance of brain blood vessels and the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in mammals, but their role in the zebrafish BBB remains unclear. Using three glial gene promoters-, , and (a truncated )-we explored glial-vascular development in zebrafish. Sparse labeling showed fewer glial-vascular interactions at early stages, with glial coverage and contact area increasing with age.

Determining the time since deposition (TSD) of bloodstains is important to establish a timeline of bloodshed, while DNA profiling addresses identity (source attribution). Traditionally treated as separate processes, this study integrates TSD estimation into routine DNA profiling by analyzing typically discarded cell lysate (eluates) from spin-column-based DNA extractions. Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to analyze eluates from bloodstains deposited up to 99 weeks.

South Africa has a high burden of human immune deficiency virus (HIV)-associated Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) which is typically Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infected, detected by histological stains. Circulating plasma EBV derived from apoptotic EBV infected tumour cells is a potential biomarker. This study aimed to evaluate the role of plasma EBV load testing in newly diagnosed HL patients and correlate pretreatment plasma EBV levels, HIV status and EBV tumour status with overall survival (OS).
