Article Synopsis
  • Rotavirus A (RVA) is a leading cause of severe gastroenteritis in children globally, and Japan introduced two rotavirus vaccines in 2011 and 2012, which became part of their national program in 2020.
  • A study analyzed stool samples from children with gastroenteritis in Japan from 2014 to 2020 to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of RVA during the voluntary vaccination period.
  • Findings showed a decrease in RVA detection rates over time, coinciding with increased vaccination rates, and a yearly change in the distribution of RVA genotypes, highlighting the evolving nature of rotavirus strains.

Group A Rotaviruses (RVA) are the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis in children and a major cause of childhood mortality in low-income countries. RVAs are mostly host-specific, but interspecies transmission and reassortment between human and animal RVAs significantly contribute to their genetic diversity. We investigated the VP7 and VP4 genotypes of RVA isolated from 225 stool specimens collected from Czech patients with gastroenteritis during 2016-2019.

Unveiling resistome profiles in the sediments of an Antarctic volcanic island.

Environ Pollut

December 2019

Microbial Resources Division, Research Center for Chemistry, Biology, and Agriculture (CPQBA), State University of Campinas - UNICAMP, Paulínia, SP, CEP 13081-970, Brazil. Electronic address:

The Deception Island, located in Maritime Antarctica, is a volcanic island with geothermal activity and one of the most visited by tourists. However, the extent of the anthropogenic impact remains largely unknown and the factors shaping the resistance/tolerance mechanisms in the microbiomes from Whalers Bay ecosystems have never been investigated. In this context, this study aimed to reveal the resistome profiles of Whalers Bay sediments and correlate them with environmental factors.

[Four years after the Ebola crisis : Challenges, experiences, and implications in the German public health context].

Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz

September 2019

Zentrum für Biologische Gefahren und Spezielle Pathogene, Robert Koch-Institut, Seestraße 10, 13353, Berlin, Deutschland.

The Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa in 2014/2015 was by far the biggest, most prolonged, and geographically most widespread outbreak of this disease since the discovery of the Ebola virus in 1976. Although no cases of Ebola virus disease were confirmed in Germany, a number of crisis management activities were initiated.Based on a combination of local, national, and international lessons learned, literature research, and a large number of discussions among German colleagues as well as German and foreign colleagues, the experiences of selected German public health actors as well as implications for health protection activities in Germany are presented.
