Ceramometallic specimens, circular in section, of varying thickness and manufactured by means of different procedures, have been tested to destruction of the ceramic layer under a once-through continuously increasing force at defined points. Identical specimens were used to determine the number of load cycles under increasing continuous stress of 430 N until the ceramic layer failed. The fatigue strength increased with the thickness of the metallic layer and was further increased by a high inherent strength of the ceramic layer. In restorations with only a thin metallic layer (foil crowns) and/or low strength values of the metal (electroplated ceramic crowns) an overall thickness of the layers of more than 1.5 mm is recommended in the occlusal area to avoid premature failure.

Enhanced mechanical properties and in vitro bioactivity of silicon nitride ceramics with SiO, YO, and AlO as sintering aids.

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater

January 2025

School of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Jinan, Jinan, 250022, China. Electronic address:

Silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) ceramics exhibit excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility, making them highly suitable for biomedical applications, particularly in implants. In this study, the mechanical properties and bioactivity of Si₃N₄ ceramics with varying amounts of Y₂O₃-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ sintering aids were investigated. Increasing the sintering additive content from 4 wt% to 8 wt% substantially improved the bulk density of the ceramics, leading to notable enhancements in mechanical properties.

The high yttria content of a stabilized zirconia (YSZ) (38 wt% YO) coating was deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) from Metco 207 powders on an Inconel 718 (Ni-based superalloy) substrate. As a metal coating connection, a layer of cermet powder (Ni-20% Al-410NS) was used before the ceramic layer deposition. The electro-chemical corrosion resistance of these materials was tested using Inconel cylinders with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 1 mm, with and without the ceramic layer.

Two 3D-printed crown materials (Crown and Ceramic Crown) were examined to determine the best surface treatment and primers for bonding. Discs of the two materials were printed and mounted with their "intaglio" surfaces untouched. Half the specimens from each group were sandblasted with 50 µm alumina.

Developing thin-film sheets made of oxide-based solid electrolytes is essential for fabricating surface-mounted ultracompact multilayer oxide solid-state batteries. To this end, solid-electrolyte slurry must be optimized for excellent dispersibility. Although oxide-based solid electrolytes for multilayer structures require sintering, high processing temperatures cause problems such as Li-ion volatilization and reactions with graphite anodes.

In Situ TEM Study of Electrical Property and Mechanical Deformation in MoS/Graphene Heterostructures.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Physical Science and Engineering, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Gokiso-cho, Showa-ku, Nagoya 466-8555, Japan.

We present a versatile method for synthesizing high-quality molybdenum disulfide (MoS) crystals on graphite foil edges via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). This results in MoS/graphene heterostructures with precise epitaxial layers and no rotational misalignment, eliminating the need for transfer processes and reducing contamination. Utilizing in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) equipped with a nano-manipulator and tungsten probe, we mechanically induce the folding, wrinkling, and tearing of freestanding MoS crystals, enabling the real-time observation of structural changes at high temporal and spatial resolutions.
