Article Synopsis
  • The peritumoral stroma influences how cancer cells migrate during metastasis, with various biophysical and biochemical cues impacting their movement and survival, leading to differences in their ability to spread and resist treatments.
  • In this study, researchers created a synthetic stromal model to explore how changes in matrix density and mechanics affect the migration behaviors of MCF10A cells, a type of cancer cell, including modes like amoeboid and mesenchymal movement.
  • The findings suggest that specific matrix conditions can promote certain migration types, which affects how well cancer cells resist apoptosis (programmed cell death), highlighting the importance of the stromal microenvironment in developing cancer therapies that target these adaptive behaviors.

Transition From Military Prehospital Medicine to Civilian EMS.

Mil Med

September 2020

National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, 132-A East Northside Dr, Clinton, MS 39056.

Introduction: Currently, there is a disconnection between veteran military medics and the civilian Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workforce. This project aimed to characterize the rate of civilian certification among military medics, both active duty and retired, and identify perceived barriers to continuing a career in EMS after military separation.

Materials And Methods: The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) administered a 21-question online survey to participants.

Transforming growth factor (TGF) β and Smad signalling pathways: A likely key to EMT-associated COPD pathogenesis.

Respirology

January 2017

NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence for Chronic Respiratory Disease, School of Medicine, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

Background And Objective: COPD is characterized by poorly reversible airflow obstruction usually due to cigarette smoking. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of COPD, and in particular a process called epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), which may well be an intermediatory between smoking and both airway fibrosis and lung cancer. The downstream classical or 'canonical' TGF-β1 pathway is via the phosphorylated (p) Smad transcription factor system.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide with a 5-year overall survival rate of less than 20 %. Considering the treatments currently available, this statistics is shocking. A possible explanation for the disconnect between sophisticated treatments and the survival rate can be related to the post-treatment enrichment of Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs), which is one of a sub-set of drug resistant tumor cells with abilities of self-renewal, cancer initiation, and further maintenance of tumors.
