  • - The authors believe that Hoffman, Singh, and Prakash haven't successfully argued that using space-time and physical objects is inappropriate for understanding the real structure of the world.
  • - They challenge the claims made by Hoffman et al. regarding the inadequacy of traditional descriptions, suggesting that these descriptions still hold validity.
  • - The authors propose that the perceptual icons proposed in interface theory should be interpreted as sense data rather than being dismissed entirely.

Article Abstract

We argue that Hoffman, Singh, and Prakash (Psychon Bull Rev, this issue) have not made the case that "the language of space-time and physical objects is the wrong language for describing the true structure of the objective world." Further, we contend that, contrary to what Hoffman et al. claim, the perceptual icons posited by interface theory seem best taken to be sense data.

Article Synopsis
  • - The Warburg effect describes how cancer cells favor aerobic glycolysis, producing more lactate even with oxygen available, which leads to an acidic tumor environment that promotes cancer traits like drug resistance and immune evasion.
  • - Proton-sensing G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), such as GPR68, can detect this acidity and activate cancer-promoting signaling pathways, suggesting a link between the acidic environment and tumor growth mechanisms.
  • - Understanding how these proton-sensing receptors relate to the Warburg effect could open up new avenues for cancer treatment by targeting the metabolic changes that favor tumor development.

In this comparative cross-linguistic study we test whether expressive interjections (words like ouch or yay) share similar vowel signatures across the world's languages, and whether these can be traced back to nonlinguistic vocalizations (like screams and cries) expressing the same emotions of pain, disgust, and joy. We analyze vowels in interjections from dictionaries of 131 languages (over 600 tokens) and compare these with nearly 500 vowels based on formant frequency measures from voice recordings of volitional nonlinguistic vocalizations. We show that across the globe, pain interjections feature a-like vowels and wide falling diphthongs ("ai" as in Ayyy! "aw" as in Ouch!), whereas disgust and joy interjections do not show robust vowel regularities that extend geographically.

Article Synopsis
  • Fermented foods have special flavors that make people want to buy them, which is why scientists are studying how these flavors develop.
  • Foods made from fermented rice and wheat are important in diets around the world and can be made in different ways like industrial production or homemade methods.
  • The study looks at the important tiny living things (microorganisms) that help create these flavors in popular foods like steamed bread and rice wine, explaining how they work together to make these foods taste better.
