Previous studies have reported that the metastable vaterite phase of calcium carbonate can be stabilized in solution by acidic additives. Here we demonstrate that vaterite can also be stabilized directly at surfaces by engineered peptides. Our data show that the mineralisation occurs in a 'self-templating' process where calcium ions restructure the peptide backbone, which in turn allows for effective vaterite precipitation.

Bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics exhibit osteoconductivity, which is the ability to form a direct bond with living bone tissue. This property is typically assessed by observing the formation of a hydroxyapatite layer using simulated body fluid (SBF), a solution designed to mimic the inorganic constituents of human blood plasma. SBF was developed by Kokubo (T.

The search for efficient, environmentally friendly adsorbents is critical for purifying dye wastewater. In this study, we produced a first-of-its-kind effective biomimetic amorphous calcium carbonate (BACC) using bacterial processes and evaluated its capacity to adsorb a hazardous organic cationic dye-methylene blue (MB). BACC can adsorb a maximum of 494.

The work of the English anatomist George Rainey is compared with that of the Dutch naturalist Pieter Harting. While the latter is regarded as a pioneer in biomimetic inorganic crystallography for precipitating unusual crystallographic forms that mimic the products of living organisms, the work of Rainey largely has been forgotten. In fact, Rainey first prepared amorphous calcium carbonate, a material that can be molded by organisms to form biogenic crystals.

Highlighting the essential role of chitosan (CS), known for its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to promote cell adhesion and proliferation, this study explores its utility in modulating the biomimetic mineralization of calcium phosphate (CaP). This approach holds promise for developing biomaterials suitable for bone regeneration. However, the interactions between the CS surface and in situ precipitated CaP still require further exploration.

Enhancement of the mechanical and biological properties of dental restoration materials is of significant importance. Drawing inspiration from the architecture and mechanical properties of natural nacre, we employed a low-cost accumulative rolling process to develop resin-ceramic composites with suitable hardness and high toughness. Plate-like aluminum oxide powder with diameters of 5-10 μm and nano-zinc oxide (ZnO) with antibacterial properties were mixed as the ceramic phase of the composite.
