We comment on a recent Letter by Hincapie et al. [Opt. Lett.40, 1623 (2015)], in which the authors proposed a method to reduce the speckle noise in digital holograms. This method was previously published by us in Maycock ["Improving reconstructions of digital holograms," Ph.D. thesis (National University of Ireland, 2012)] and Maycock and Hennelly [Improving Reconstructions of Digital Holograms: Speckle Reduction and Occlusions in Digital Holography (Lambert Academic, 2014)]. We also wish to highlight an important limitation of the method resulting from the superposition of different perspectives of the object/scene, which was not addressed in their Letter.

The angular dependence of random laser (RL) generation in a commercially available rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) dye has been demonstrated using ZnO-CuO heterostructure as passive scatterers. The grass-like superstructure formed at a 1M:1M molar ratio of ZnO-CuO significantly enhances scattering, resulting in RL spikes with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of just a few nanometer and a noticeable reduction in the RL threshold. RL emission spectra were collected over an angular spread of 0-180 degrees, revealing a remarkable shift in RL emission from 566 nm to 580 nm.

Objectives: Supra-normal left ventricular ejection fraction (snLVEF) represents a heterogeneous group with distinct prognoses. Left atrial (LA) strain, measured by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE), is a validated prognostic indicator. This study aimed to evaluate LA and left ventricular (LV) mechanical strains in hypertensive patients with snLVEF.

Abnormal tau phosphorylation is a key mechanism in neurodegenerative diseases. Evidence implicates infectious agents, such as Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1), as co-factors in the onset or the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. This has led to divergence in the field regarding the contribution of viruses in the etiology of neurodegenerative diseases.

In fiber-based confocal microscopy, using two separate fibers for illumination and collection enables the use of a few-mode fiber to achieve an effect similar to opening the pinhole in a conventional confocal microscope. In some Fourier-domain applications, however, or when a spectral measurement is involved, the coherent light detection would lead to noticeable spectral modulation artifacts that result from differential mode delay, an effect caused by the multimode propagation in the collection fiber. After eliminating these artifacts by using mode-dependent polarization control, we demonstrate effective spectrally encoded imaging with improved signal efficiency and lower speckle noise, and only a minor, negligible reduction in lateral and axial resolutions.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by high postoperative recurrence rates, and predicting early recurrence is crucial for improving clinical outcomes, yet remains challenging. Both preoperative computed tomography (CT) imaging radiomic features and serum biomarkers related to microvascular infiltration are important indicators of HCC prognosis. This study aimed to develop a nomogram model incorporating both preoperative CT radiomic features and serum biomarkers associated with microvascular infiltration to predict early postoperative recurrence in HCC patients.
