The present work, analyzes the potential of defatted pongamia oil cake (DPOC) for the biosorption of Zn(II) ions from aqueous solutions in the both batch and column mode. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the optimal pH, effect of adsorbent dosage, initial Zn(II) ions concentration and contact time. The biosorption equilibrium and kinetics data for Zn(II) ions onto the DPOC were studied in detail, using several models, among all it was found to be that, Freundlich and the second-order model explained the equilibrium data well. The calculated thermodynamic parameters had shown that the biosorption of Zn(II) ions was exothermic and spontaneous in nature. Batch desorption studies showed that the maximum Zn(II) recovery occurred, using 0.1 M EDTA. The Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) and the Thomas model was successfully employed to evaluate the model parameters in the column mode. The results indicated that the DPOC can be applied as an effective and eco-friendly biosorbent for the removal of Zn(II) ions in polluted wastewater.

Nowadays, benzimidazole and its derivatives are widely assembled into multifunctional materials with various properties such as mechanochromism, photochromism, thermochromism and electrochromism. Herein, two novel zinc(II) coordination compounds, [Zn(L)Br]·2HO (1) and [Zn(L)Cl]·2HO (2) (L = tetra(1-benzo[]imidazol-2-yl)ethene), have been constructed one-pot facile synthesis from bis(1-benzo[]imidazol-2-yl)methane (L) and zinc(II) salts. The ligand L with a CC double bond was formed by C-C coupling of two sp-C atoms of L in solvothermal synthesis, which provides a new strategy to generate the conjugation system conveniently.

Energy crisis and environmental pollution are two central themes of contemporary research towards achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). Material chemistry is the chief discipline that can resolve glitches in these areas through the appropriate design of chemical compounds with multifunctional properties. In this regard, two stable coordination polymers (CPs) were synthesised in this work using Zn(II) (3d) and Cd(II) (d) metal nodes with 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate () as the bridging ligand and monodentate pyridyl-N coordinated 9-fluoren-2-yl-pyridin-4-ylmethylene-amine (flpy) as the fluorogenic partner.

Three fluorescent Zn coordaintion polymers (CPs) have been synthesized from the reactions of Zn(NO3)2∙6H2O, benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (1,4-H2bdc), and angular carbazole-derived bispyridyl ligands (Cz-3,6-bpy or Cz-Pr-3,6-bpy). CPs 1-3 all adopt similar two-dimensional (2D) ring-and-rod layer structures, described as topologically 4-connected 2∙65 nets where the Zn(II) centers act as 4-connected nodes. CPs 1 and 2 are a pair of solvent-mediated supramolecular isomers where the former shows a two-fold interlocked 2D → 2D polyrotaxane-like entangled net and the latter reveals a four-fold interpenetrated 2D → 3D polyrotaxane entanglement.

A magnetic chitosan-based ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) with high adsorption capacity, excellent selectivity for Ga(III), easy magnetic separation, and remarkable reusability was synthesized via a simple crosslinking polymerization. The IIP exhibited a Ga(III) adsorption capacity of 434.00 mg/g at pH 4, demonstrating high efficiency for Ga(III) removal from aqueous solutions.

Although significant progress has been made in the effective measurement of Zn(II), Аlizarin red S (ARS) was immobilized on polyethylene polyamine-modified polyacrylonitrile (PPF-1) via a new matrix. This approach allows the detection of low levels of Zn(II) ions in various water samples via preconcentrated atomic absorption spectrometry. The use of PPF-1 in a polymer matrix for zinc preconcentration presents several advantages over traditional sorbtion-spectroscopic methods, including reduced cost, high zinc recovery, increased sensitivity, and selectivity.
