Tl-doped type-II clathrate Cs8Na16-xTlxGe136 was synthesized from its elements. The structure was characterised by single crystal and powder diffraction. Cs8Na16-xTlxGe136 crystallized in the space group Fd3[combining macron]m. The melting point decreased with increasing Tl content at 925.0 °C, 922.8 °C and 915.7 °C for Cs8Na14.76(3)Tl1.24(2)Ge136, Cs8Na9.94(2)Tl6.06(2)Ge136 and Cs8Na8.36(2)Tl7.64(2)Ge136 in Ar atmosphere, respectively. Cs8Na9.94(2)Tl6.06(2)Ge136 exhibited diamagnetism with χ = -3.11 × 10(-3) emu mol(-1) at 1.8 K. The heat capacity of Cs8Na9.94(2)Tl6.06(2)Ge136 presented an Einstein peak at 10 K. The fitted parameters for Cs8Na9.94(2)Tl6.06(2)Ge136 were λ = 0.115(4) J mol(-1) K(-2), β = 0.0289(2) J mol(-1) K(-4), NE = 7.94(4), θE = 56.9(1) K, ND = 152.06(4) and θD = 217(1) K using the equation Cp = Ce + CD + CE from 1.8 K to 10 K. The thermoelectric measurement showed metallic resistivity and a negative Seebeck coefficient, indicating electron-type charge carriers. The electronic structure calculation for Cs8Na10Tl6Ge136 confirmed the nature of the metallic transport behavior with conducting electrons, mainly from the Ge p orbitals.

The role of noncovalent bonding, including multiatomic interactions (van der Waals-like forces) and ionic characteristics, in the intermetallic clathrate A Si (A = Na, K, Rb; 0 < ≤ 24) is qualitatively discussed. Using the local density approximation (LDA) to density functional theory (DFT), we investigated the effect of different guest filling and pressure parameters on the structural and electronic properties of these materials. In the context of the rigid-band model, we first noted that the competition between van der Waals-like multiatomic interactions and ionicity due to the extent of charge transfer responsible for guest-framework complexes accounts for the nonmonotonic structural response upon guest filling in A Si (0 ≤ ≤ 8), which is in good agreement with previous experimental findings as well as theoretical predictions.

The thermal conductivity of cyclopentane clathrate hydrate (CP CH) of type II was measured at temperatures down to 100 K and at pressures up to 1.3 GPa. The results show that CP CH displays amorphous-like characteristic of many crystalline clathrate hydrates, , tetrahydrofuran (THF) CH.

Type II inorganic clathrates consist of cage-like structures with open frameworks, and they are considered promising materials due to their unique properties. However, the difficulty of synthesizing phase-pure and continuous films has hindered their application in practical devices. In this report, we demonstrate the synthesis of type II SiGe clathrate films through the thermal decomposition of a Na-deposited amorphous SiGe film on a sapphire substrate in a high vacuum.

Computational Screening and Stabilization of Boron-Substituted Type-I and Type-II Carbon Clathrates.

Boron substitution represents a promising approach to stabilize carbon clathrate structures, but no thermodynamically stable substitution schemes have been identified for frameworks other than the type-VII (sodalite) structure type. To investigate the possibility for additional tetrahedral carbon-based clathrate networks, more than 5000 unique boron decoration schemes were investigated computationally for type-I and type-II carbon clathrates with a range of guest elements including Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba. Density functional theory calculations were performed at 10 and 50 GPa, and the stability and impact of boron substitution were evaluated.

Type I and type II silicon clathrates are guest-host structures made of silicon polyhedral cages large enough to contain atoms that can be either inserted or evacuated with only a slight volume change of the structure. This feature is of interest not only for batteries or storage applications but also for tuning the properties of the silicon clathrate films. The thermal decomposition process can be tuned to obtain Na8Si46 and Na2 View Article and Find Full Text PDF
