Lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is a key enzyme in the esterification of cholesterol and its subsequent incorporation into the core of high density lipoprotein (HDL) particles. It is also involved in reverse cholesterol transport (RCT), the mechanism by which cholesterol is removed from peripheral cells and transported to the liver for excretion. These processes are involved in the development of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease (CHD) and may have therapeutic implications. This work describes the use of baculovirus as a transducing vector to express LCAT in mammalian cells, expression of the recombinant protein as a high-mannose glycoform suitable for deglycosylation by Endo H and its purification to homogeneity and characterization. The importance of producing underglycosylated forms of secreted glycoproteins to obtain high-resolution crystal structures is discussed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of the activity of lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), the enzyme responsible for esterification of cholesterol in plasma, as a predictor of retained placenta (RP) in close-up cows, compared with the non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentration. This study was conducted as a case-control study between February 2010 and February 2016, on a single farm with approximately 200 Holstein parous cows in Hokkaido, Japan. Of the 1187 dairy cattle that calved, 835 dairy cattle were enrolled that underwent routine regular health examinations including blood sampling, body condition score (BCS) and the rumen fill score (RFS) at the close-up stage between 2 and 21 days before their expected calving dates.

Background: Major depression is classified into distinct subtypes: simple (SDMD) and major dysmood disorder (MDMD). MDMD patients exhibit elevated atherogenicity and decreased reverse cholesterol transport (RCT). However, comprehensive data regarding lipid metabolism is absent in first episode (FE)-SDMD.

Although the beneficial effects of fiber supplementation on overall health and the gut microbiome are well-known, it is not clear whether fiber supplementation can also alter the concentrations of lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), a marker of intestinal permeability. A secondary analysis of a previously conducted study was performed. In the randomized-order, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, cross-over study 20 healthy, young participants consuming a low-fiber diet at baseline were administered a daily dose of 12 g of prebiotic fiber compared with a placebo over a period of 4 weeks with a 4-week washout between arms.

A 59-year-old Japanese woman was referred for an extremely low level of circulating high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The serum HDL-C level had long been within the normal range but suddenly decreased asymptomatically to 7 mg/dL. She had no typical symptoms associated with familial lecithin, cholesterol acyltransferase deficiency (FLD), including proteinuria, anemia, and corneal opacity.
