The house mouse Mus musculus domesticus is characterized by more than 100 metacentric populations, due to the occurrence of Robertsonian (Rb) fusions, together with the standard all-telocentric karyotype (2n = 40). We examined G-banded karyotypes of 18 mice from 10 localities in Sicily and describe 3 new metacentric populations: 'Ragusa Ibla' (IRAG), 2n = 33-36, Rb(2.4), Rb(5.6), Rb(9.16), Rb(13.17); 'Piana degli Albanesi' (IPIA), 2n = 23, Rb(1.18), Rb(2.15), Rb(3.5), Rb(4.12), Rb(6.11), Rb(7.8), Rb(9.16), Rb(10.14), Rb(13.17); 'Trapani' (ITRA), 2n = 22, Rb(1.18), Rb(2.15), Rb(3.7), Rb(4.12), Rb(5.9), Rb(6.11), Rb(8.16), Rb(10.14), Rb(13.17). Three mice belonged to the previously reported 'Castelbuono' race (ICAS), 2n = 24, which is very similar to the nearby 'Palermo' (IPAL) race, 2n = 26. Three Rb fusions not yet observed in wild mouse populations were identified: Rb(3.5), Rb(3.7) and Rb(5.9). Rb fusions shared among 4 races (IPIA, IRAG, ICAS, and IPAL) allowed us to describe their potential phylogenetic relationships. We obtained 2 alternative phylogenetic trees. The differences between them are mainly due to various modes of formation of IPIA and ITRA. In the first hypothesis, the specific Rb fusions occurred independently. In the second, those of IRAG originated from those of IPIA via whole-arm reciprocal translocations.

A new hexaploid cytotype of has been identified in Türkiye. To assess the ploidy levels of native populations, 50 samples from Adıyaman, Batman, Bitlis, Diyarbakır, Hakkari, Mardin, Siirt, Şanlıurfa, Şırnak, and Van were analyzed using flow cytometry and cytogenetic techniques. DNA content was determined by comparison with standard plants.

Chromosomal translocations can result in phenotypic effects of varying severity, depending on the position of the breakpoints and the rearrangement of genes within the interphase nucleus of the translocated chromosome regions. Balanced translocations are often asymptomatic phenotypically and are typically detected due to a decrease in fertility resulting from issues during meiosis. Robertsonian translocations are among the most common chromosomal abnormalities, often asymptomatic, and can persist in the population as a normal polymorphism.

To characterize the chromosomes of the four species of Miller, 1754, used in traditional Chinese medicine, Hua, 1892, Collett et Hemsley, 1890, (Miller, 1768) Druce, 1906, and Redouté, 1811, and have an insight into the karyotype variation of the genus , fluorescence hybridization (FISH) with 5S and 45S rDNA oligonucleotide probes was applied to analyze the karyotypes of 9 populations of the four species. Detailed molecular cytogenetic karyotypes of the 9 populations were established for the first time using the dataset of chromosome measurements and FISH signals of 5S and 45S rDNA. Four karyotype asymmetry indices, CV, CV, M and Stebbins' category, were measured to elucidate the asymmetry of the karyotypes and karyological relationships among species.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study employed cytological analysis and genetic methods to assess how chromosomal fusions affect recombination patterns, revealing that these fusions lead to changes like increased recombination near chromosome ends and altered interference levels in crossover events.
  • * The findings highlight the combined influence of Robertsonian fusions and the Prdm9 gene on genomic recombination, with Prdm9 playing a key role at the population level, while the effects of fusions were more localized to specific chromosome regions.
