Neurotrophic drug cortexin, a lyophilized extraction of animal cortex, comprises neuropeptides, amino acids and trace elements. The nucleoprotein complexes of the cerebral cortex can also retain elements of chromatin with DNA fragments. All of these components of cortexin have a specific range of "targets" for the specific correction of the molecular and cellular processes at various stages of the pathological process. A modern concept of neurosignaling considers the associated processes - from the synaptic level to the epigenetic patterns of neuron nucleus, in which an important place belongs to corrective peptide molecules. Peptide components of cortexin derived from the animal brain, which interact with cellular and molecular "targets", provide a new view on mechanisms of neuroprotection.

The goal of treatment of brain pathologies may be regarded as re-establishment of optimal brain plasticity. Disturbances in neuroplasticity are associated with the appearance of multiple targets that should be subjects for pharmacological correction. Peptide hydrolysates derived from animal brain became a basis for multi-component organ-specific drugs which are widely used for treatment of cerebral pathologies.

Amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides are the major components of senile plaques, one of the main pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer disease (AD). However, Aβ peptides' functions are not fully understood and seem to be highly pleiotropic. We hypothesized that plasma Aβ peptides concentrations could be a suitable endophenotype for a genome-wide association study (GWAS) designed to (i) identify novel genetic factors involved in amyloid precursor protein metabolism and (ii) highlight relevant Aβ-related physiological and pathophysiological processes.

The modeling of chronic alcohol intoxication for 30 days in rats leads to an increase in the level of free metabolites of nitrogen oxide and NO-synthase with simultaneous decrease in the levels of L-arginine, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. The subsequent 14-day treatment with neuropeptide cerebroprotectors cerebrocurin, cortexin, and cerebrolysin led to normalization of the parameters of nitrogen oxide system. The maximum therapeutic activity was shown by cerebrocurin, which can be recommended for inclusion as component of alcoholic encephalopathy treatment.

Based on complex clinical-biochemical studies of 60 patients after ischemic stroke (on average 2,4+/-0,3 years from the disease-onset), we showed the disturbance of balance between anti- and prooxidant systems. The changes in the parameters of oxidative stress were revealed as follows: the reduction in the activity of antioxidant defense markers (superoxiddismutase, catalase, oxidized and reduced glutathione), as well as in the spontaneous and induced hemoluminescence, the increase of malonic dialdehyde, a final product of lipid peroxidation. The changes in biochemical parameters were correlated with the severity of ischemic stroke consequences, assessed by the Rankin scale and the Barthel index.
