Two new species of Thyronectria growing in Mediterranean vegetation are described from southern Spain; they are T. giennensis from Quercus ilex ssp. rotundifolia and T. pistaciae from Pistacia lentiscus. Both species are characterized by morphology of sexual and asexual morphs and by DNA data. They have olivaceous to green-brown muriform ascospores and are closely related to T. asturiensis and T. roseovirens, as determined by multigene phylogenetic analyses of a matrix containing six loci (ITS and 28S regions of nuc rDNA, ACT1, RPB1, RPB2, TEF1 and TUB2 genes). We also report that Cucurbitaria bicolor is a synonym of Thyronectria rhodochlora, the type species of Thyronectria.

This article is the 13th contribution in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein 125 taxa from four phyla, ten classes, 31 orders, 69 families, 92 genera and three genera are treated, demonstrating worldwide and geographic distribution. The holotype of Thyronectria hyperantarctica was re-examined, redescribed, and compared with new collections of an Antarctic bryophilous ascomycete from a similar area. Because the condition of type material was insufficient for molecular studies, the authors designated an epitype from newly collected material with a high degree of morphological similarity to the holotype and paratype material. Phylogenetic analysis of the epitype revealed that its closest phylogenetic affinity was with the family Tilachlidiaceae and it formed a monophyletic group in this lineage within other collections of the species.
